I was reading down the page about the Vortek vs the older type GM engines.I have a 2000 3/4 ton twd Vortek 5.7 litre with 373 rear gears and auto trans w/overdrive and all it gets is 12-12.5 mph local and 17.8 on the interstate. Will a new program from Hypertech help this?My 93 with throttle body injection,342 gears and extended cab, bigger tires, and 4wd got better than 14 mpg in town and 18-19 on the hwy.I thought that the Vortek and the overdrive that it would be better than it is on fuel.Oh by the way a friend told me an 8.1 litre will kill you on gas.His was bad enough that he traded it off.

If you wanna play ya gotta pay. Wife has a 2004 2500HD; 8.1 Vortec; Allison trans; crew cab; short bed; 4x4. It is one heck of a truck and does everything she wants and more. 13MPG cruising and 9.5 MPG @18,000 pounds and 70 MPH.

Can it help, yes,if you keep your foot out of it.I put a chip in my Ford dually and ran it on the lowest setting above stock in hopes of better milage but it only got worse then I realized I was in the throttle more because I liked the extra power I had.I started driving "normally" again and it did jump up,but only a couple MPGs.

You guys should count your lucky stars. I recently bought a 1996 1 ton Chevy dually with a 8.1 in it and it is getting around 10.5 mpg. Am thing about going to Hypertech to see it that won't help a bit. Will also put on Flowmasters to help. Hope to get it to at least 12mpg. Got my fingers crossed.

An 8.1 in a '96? Are you sure it isn't a 454?

I have an 8.1 with 6spd manual 4.10 rear end and get around 12.5 to 13 usually. I have gotten up to 15. I can load it up and it doesn't get below 10mpg. When you factor in higher upfront cost, increased fuel cost, and increased maintiance cost, I figure that I am better off than with a diesel.

That's the same way I looked at it. Just couldn't see an extra $5,000 for the duramax and allison, plus where I live the price of diesel is always higher than gasoline.

After I purchased mine the price of diesel went above gas but the money I saved by getting the 6spd. more than offset the extra cost for the 8.1. I was debating on the crew vs. extended cab and got the crew. Last week me and three others went to the National Farm Show in Louisville in it. Being able to take them made it worth the extra money to me. I Love My Truck.

This is interesting, your 3/4 ton with 3.73 gears and 5,7 gets 12 to 12.5 mpg local. My 2001 one ton with 8.1 and 4.11 rear gets 11.5 to 12 mpg local, usually pulling a trailer.

I just figuerd it being that late model that fuel economy would just be built into the truck but it isn't.Are the computors programmed different on a 3/4 ton versus a 1998 half ton pick up with the same engine(5.7 vortek)? The friend that had the 8.1 truck had the Allison transmission in it and it sure made some funny noises. He said the truck would run like a striped ape though.
