Bondering the thoughts about purchasing a 8970 New Holland. Current one where looking at is a 1995 model with 3500 hrs on it. The dealer has worked on a couple of issues with it. The right brake was giving out and the tractor smoked quite a bit when it was started up. What was found was that the right brake piston had the wrong groove depth cut in for the flat O-ring and they had the fuel pump and injectors rebuilt. This concerns me a little for this many hours. I have heard some good things about these tractors but I do not want to buy a lemon. The dealer printed out a service record on this tractor and it showed nothing else that had been done. What should I look over and/or ask more questions about?? What recommmendation it there to purchase one of these???? Currently they have the tractor priced at 52K.

I worked on New Holland Genesis tractors for three years or so. It's not uncommon for one of the early ones to be pretty hot on the dyno. 300+ horsepower is a bunch out of a 7.5 liter diesel, but I've heard of other 8970s running that much smoke. Be forewarned that the Genesis blocks are parent-bore with no sleeves, so rebuilding requires either a hone job and rings if the cylinders are still within wear specs or a bore job, new pistons and rings. Although I don't think I'd worry to much about the hours being "turned back", as the tachometer/hourmeter is electronic and contained within a controller, I would maybe be worried about a Genesis with 3500 hours that hadn't had any other work done to it. Several years after they came out, we were still getting several Service Bulletins per month on them. One of the most common problems was a leaking front seal, as the steel sleeve on the front of the cranks wasn't hardened properly, and the seal would cut into it and cause a leak within the first 1500 hours or less. Look for a leak there. They also seemed to be pretty hard on A/C compressor clutches. I replaced several of those. If it's a Super-Steer tractor, there are a ton of grease zerks on the front end. Make sure they've all been greased. But, generally speaking, they're a strong and relatively trouble-free tractor, and would be my first choice after a Deere 8000 for a big row-crop of that vintage. If you have any other questions I could possibly answer, feel free to email me at deeremeyer@yahoo.com.

Suspect that hours have been turned back. Look closely at tire wear, pedals, etc. Are you saying that the "lift pump" or that the "injection pump" was rebuilt? Sounds like a tractor that has way more hours on it. Also IF the maintenance records supposedly shows no other work, then decent maintenance may not have been done. Ask lots of questions, and get "your" mechanic to check it out - - compression, etc.

Injection pump and injectors were rebuilt. When the guy traded in to the NH dealer he stated that is smoked to much when it was started up. So the dealer sent the injection pump/ injectors out to be rebuilt. My dad asked them to put in on the dino when they put it back together. They agreed. Quess what, the dealer maxed the dino out at 300HP ++ and the tractor hardley ever lost any rpms. Which then made us wander what it really had before they took off the injection pump. Did is smoke because of the high HP??? We really don't know. Since, they have detuned it back to 225 HP. We have had some conversation wih the previous ower and he stated that the tractor was unstoppable. Know we know why.

Hhmm, sounds to me like somebody hotrodded it. They are incredible pulling tractors, this last year at my local field days it was an 8970 that took the win in the 30,000lb free for all, but it defienatly wasn't stock. Any time you squeeze alot more power out of an engine, it's life is shortened, and in this case it was atleast 75ptohp over, and you said it wasn't phazed at all, so it probably has alot more. Now, just about every tractor will have alittle more than it's supposed to, but not that much. Take for example, the guy I work for has a white 2-155 thats rated for 155ptohp and it was put on a dyno and it showed 168ptohp, and that was the way it came from the factory, thats normal, but you won't find 75hp plus.
From what you've said so far, I'd pass on this rig and look for another, theres a pile of those 8970's around. Look in a Fastline magazine and you will find many. Do a search on the Fastline website from the link below.
hope this helps,

my uncle has an 8670 (6500 hs.)he bought new and an 8870 (3500 hs.)he bought used. the 8670 had the tranny go out this summer otherwise none other major mechanical probelms. both have had some electrical probelms, sensors mostly. but a couple months ago both were upgraded with the newest software and the shifts are much smoother and everything performs better. they are a descent tractor. as for the price i have no idea what my uncle paid for his nor do i have an idea of what is a good price.
