Hi, I have a 9N sitting in the shed, but I have been lusting over live hydraulics/PTO and looking for a loader for a little while now. Found a MF165 Diesel w/ QT loader at a dealership reasonably close. Just wondering if his $6900 is close or should I be looking to negotiate a little harder. I also posted this on the MF board.

What would you expect the price difference between gas and diesel to be? What do people think of the 165? I know the 135 is almost universally loved by those who are lucky enough to have one.

Thanks,

Kirk

BTW, location is south-central PA.

I live in the same general area as you. I looked for quite a while before I found a decent tractor with a QT loader (Ford 3000 w/Woods loader). The price isn"t bad at all for a good utility tractor with a relatively new loader around here - especially on a dealer"s lot. The 165 is a little bigger tractor than mine (more like a Ford 4000), but I paid $1,000 more with a 7 ft. back blade. Most of the tractors I went to see had a beat up 35 year old loader attached: They weighed so much that they handled like a tank. You"ll know once you drive it and operate the loader if it"s right for you.

Kirt,
I purchased a 1971 MF 165 dsl, new rears tires, 8 fd, 2 rev, hi-lo trans, low hours about 2 yrs ago. I absolutly love it!!! With the deal I also got a (Gill) heavy duty 6.5ft rear blade for $5000. Based on what I have seen on this page on loaders they bring the value up 1000 to 1500 on the tractor. Things to look for:
1. Check out the power steering unit up front
2. Check the hours, gauges, lights etc
3. Check the trans
4. Check the front end, loader wear the front of tractors out, check for welds on the front axle & check the pivot pin. 5. check the loader out closely, look for welds etc
6. Make sure the loader is run off a front mounted pump. The factory hydrualics will make the loader respond very slowly!!!
7. See if the seller with let you put a bush hog on the back and try it out, this way you test the hydraulics and PTO system. Hope this helps
Charlie

Dad's got a 165, he bought it at an auction at least 15 years ago. Paid a lot less ($4,000- but no loader) than that, but it's also a gas. One thing comes to mind, why did someone get rid of it? They're great tractors unless there's a major problem. And, not knowing the condition, it sounds high for that old of a tractor- unless it's in restored condition. Bet you could do better buying from a private individual. JMHO
