I found the name of the man who recorded the song about Sweet Alice Chalmers and the John Deere Tractor! It was recorded by Larry Sparks, of bluegrass music fame! Maybe this will help yer search. In the song, the fellow went to the big city to work, and met a girl named Alice Chalmers. Things went sour, and he wrote to mother, telling her how he missed the farm and his John Deere tractor, and of the big mistake he had made by leaving home! Send me an e-mail address or yer home address, and i'll send a copy of the words! It'll come from "ahamm---", via Outlook express! Or regular snail mail. I have the music,. but don't know which tape it is on, and i have 20 tapes to go thru, so thats out! by: Rustyj

Would be delighted to hear your version, but what I recall would be a story, not a song which went like this - - - - John Deere married Alice Chalmers, and drove their Waterloo Bronco to a honeymoon spot in Minneapolis Moline. After a year of wedded bliss, a son named Oliver was born. This is where I lose it, most of the tractors brands are mentioned in this story. Thanks Rustyj14 Popcorn

I've found the lyrics to John Deere Tractor. Go to BluegrassLyrics.com, go into the song area. look up "John Deere Tractor". Also there is a web site named: Barb Dietrich's Bluegrass Lyrics. They have an alphabetical listing of songs! Send me an e-mail address if you can't find the sites. I have the song in my files. I didn't find a reference to Alice Chalmers in it, but i did hear the name in the song i heard on radio. I do think the song sort of refers to Alice, but the name isn't in it! by: Rustyj

About 20 years ago +/-, on our local radio bluegrass program, there was a song about sweet Alice Chalmers, and it included the John Deere Tractor. I can only remember a few of the words, and a bit of the music. Don't know who sang it or what band, but maybe somebody in the local area may have the words and music. If so, I'll try to put it in this forum. I know a bunch of folks in the local bluegrass scene, and tonight may yield a clue, since our local bluegrass mentor knows everything! Several decades ago I, too, heard the story that I think you are seeking. I tried some Net searches and didn't find it however.

A few years back I came across a segment on one of the tractor shows (classic tractor fever?) on RFD-TV which told a story similar to the one you're interested in. From what i can remember an older gentleman who was a John Deere fan met a lady who was an Allis Chalmers fan at different tractor shows. Anyway to make a long story short they were married and now have a shed full of green and orange. This may not be the same story to which you are referring but it sounds pretty close

Nick, I guess I'm being too detail here but I think the guy owned the Allis and the lady had the John Deeres. I guess I been watching these shows too much. I have the tractor show on now.
