Picked up a small load of heating coal today (about 45 miles from home)for the first time, I've been using wood. Big mine there with all sorts and varieties (sizes) of stuff, I bought what they called "nugget" coal, it's about fist-sized chunks to use in my little cast iron stove in my small backyard shop when I'm working out there in the winter. They also sell "stoker" coal (which is like gravel) and also "kitchen" coal (which is big huge chunks). I paid $31 per ton Canadian (about $2.40 US). How does this price stack up for coal price compared to where you live?

Coal stoker systems may make a comeback if electrical, oil and gas prices keep rising. Good system once most people's preconceived ideas are set straight. Hitzer and Harmon make good stoker and lump coal burners. Neumatic and Ground Hog make lump coal burners. No shortage of coal in North America for several hundred years more.

Where are you located?? In BC or the Maritimes? I live in south central BC and would like to get some coal to use as well. Could you name the company and if they market it elsewhere. thanks

The coal mine is located near Riley, Alberta ... about 50 miles southeast of Edmonton. When you drive in, the stuff is coming right out of the ground, they load huge tractor trailer units with the stuff. I shovelled my load on from a ground level bin because I had tubs and garbage cans instead of dropping it into my pickup box. The name of the outfit is Dodds Coal Mine (or Red Flame Coal) and their phone number is 780-663-2285. My son works for a big shop closer to the Saskatchewan border and they heat their shop with that stoker coal with their big furnaces which are auto-feed. Just had a nice fire going, lots of heat once it gets going.

How much does coal cost at Riley, and where can I find a stove to burn it in, in Edmonton or surrounding area.

thanks Derek

Thanks for the quick response. Used to live in Alberta (wetaskiwin) so know the area fairly well. We do get out there a couple times a year. Will give them a call to see if they have distributors out this way.
