Would anyone know you makes the super tech (wal-mart)brand oil. I mainly use Rotella in my tractors but have considered using the Wal-Mart store brand. Also, a NAPA store guy told me that the NAPA brand was valvoline. Any info on that? Just thought I would see if anyone might know. What a great site for learning about old tractors.

I run an oil testing lab and we collect API oils every year, about 1000 - 4 qt. samples to be exact. The sample are then tested to see if suppliers are complying with what they say they are selling. Oils bearing the API logo seem to have very few off spec products, usually about 1 in every 100. The tech one is a good oil.

Since my fellow Americans already sent my job to India, I don't worry about them any more. I been using super tech oil for a couple of years, as long as I been unemployed, seems to work about the same as the others.

I did think is was strange the price of gas went through the roof and the price of supertech held steady.

If it meets the required SAE weight and the API service classification in your manual, it doesn't matter who makes it. It's not like the refineries make a bad batch to sell to Wal-Mart. It cost more to change over the refinery equipment to make poor qualitiy lube oils than you'll ever make selling to Wal-Mart. And then you have to keep it separate in storage and on and on. Lube oil is a comodity. They (Wal-mart) get a good deal because they buy in vast quantities. I don''t believe brand is important. I've had a Ford Service Manager tell me that he's seen more cars that had lube related failures that used Penzoil. I don't believe him but that's what he said.

I buy my oil at Costco. It's Chevron and they are cheaper than anyone else in my area and IT MEETS THE SAE WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS AND THE API SERVICE CLLASSIFICATION that the vehicle/tractor manufacturers specify.

I tend to agree with your mechanic on Penzoil. While it is true that all major brands meet the SAE ad API specs, some are naturally better than others. I have taken a lot of engines apart and if they are maintained as they should be then Penzoil is fine. What I have found is that neglected engines that run Penzoil are terribly dirty on the inside. A lot more that other oils. It has been a long time since my Fuels and Lube class in college but I remember seeing a report on oils ranked in order and Penzoil was the last entry on the report. Again, it met all the requirements but my feeling is that I can spend that $$$ on another brand of oil that ranks better for the same money.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for your response.
I guess the operative words are "...maintained as they should be...". To me that's per the manufacturer's instructions. I foumd that most people don't read the maintenance instructions and use the maximum allowable miles between changes as the bench mark. If you read(and it's not in fine print) the maintenance instructions for engine oil changes, a condition called "Severe Operation" is defined. It usually goes something like this: stop and go traffic, long periods of idling, dusty roads, operating for short periods of time daily, etc. If that's the case, then you should change the oil every 3000 miles or three months which ever comes sooner. It's hard for me to fault a brand because somebody went 40,000 miles before they changed the oil, yet we all know someone who thinks that way. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the info and comments. I understand those that that have been hurt by Wal-Mart and it's business practices. Web sites like this can only help the public to understand what they really get and do when they shop at Wal-Mart. I try to shop local and suppport my neighbors and friends however there are only so many dollars to go around and most everyone looks for the best buy. Thanks again.

I don't know how they treat sales staff, but they treat their truck drivers pretty darn good. I am in the AF reserves and an activated reservist friend of mine is a Wal Mart truck driver. They have continued to pay his salary while he has been on active duty. He has been on active duty for almost two years now.

I read a study done on retail in rural areas after a Walmart located there. In short, where there are not other big box retail competition there was a net negative effect on the economy of the area, the hardest hit areas being those that are largely rural.

If you've ever been an employee for a "Mom & Pop" outfit in a small town you'd think Walmart's wages and benefits looked pretty good.

According to what I've seen on other websites, the supplier varies. It depends on Walmart's oil spec requirements and who is the lowest bidder.

I would like to know the supplier also. I use it in all my hi mileage clunkers which are all I drive anyway and it's working fine. It has a good clean smell kinda like Valvoline or Conoco. I think that the 15-40 would be fine in about any tractor.

I understand that Napa oil is Valvoline as are many other house brand oils. If you look on the bottles you should be able to find who packaged the oil. I am fortunate enough to have a local source to buy my oil within two miles of my place. It is a locally owned True Value store and Wal-Mart has nothing over them. They have their house brand as well as name brand oils.

Didn't know Citgo was the same as Pennzoil. Bought two cases of Citgo from "Dollar General" last summer to use in an old dump truck I borrowed that was burning oil (a quart and hour). 10W30 and 10W40 were only .50 a quart. I think the 10W30 is headed for the Farmall this spring. Being SAE rated I figured it couldn't be too bad, if I'd know it was Pennzoil I'd have bought more.
