I have two 95 Ford pickups I borrow regularly to tow things with..Problem is both have the same check engine light problem that is supposed to be bad EGR valves. One gets less than ten MPG, and the other isn't much better. The valve alone is supposed to be $200 plus...
Does anyone know what these things get for mileage when they are running properly? And will there be anything else I need to look for on the fuel mileage issue besides the EGR? (Yes, there aren't any rust issues on tanks or fuel lines.)

Thanks!

it's the same thing all over. That darned computer has taken over every thing on a veehickle. You have to get a analyser first and then attach it to the computer plug. Then let the computer tell you what the problem code is, and then maybe it will be that item, maybe. 10 mpg is not that great so if you know someone with the analyser the it might help to attach it and try to locate the culprit.

I had a bad oxygen sensor in my 2002 Blazer V6
that caused gas milage to drop 3 to 4 miles per gallon.

Check engine light could mean a lot of things. Get yourself a OBD-II code reader (or EEC-V, same thing) and pull the codes. For a bad EGR you'll probably get a 327 or 332 code. Other things to check, though, are the vacuum lines, all of them. Your owners manual should show you where they all are. Any cracks in the vacuum lines can also cause computer problems and a CEL light.

For comparison, my 95 F-150 2WD with the 5.0 V-8 gets 15-17 mpg, but if I lock out the OD for towing, it can drop to 10.

And yes, by all means try cleaning your EGR valve carefully before you fork over the bucks to replace it.

Some things to check:

timing incorrect

plugged air cleaner

plugged cats

MAP sensor out of wack

Engine coolant temperature sensor bad

thermostat permanently open so running cold

ECM no longer functioning properly

dragging brakes

incorrect tire pressure

bad ox sensor

trans overdrive not engaged or not selected

plugged PCV valve or hose

in bad need of a tune up

I kind of suspect there are problems in addition to the EGR valves. If the trouble light comes on and the engine is running open loop. The computer is just guessing at fuel mixture, timing and never locks the torque convertor. If the EGR doesn't function at cruise the engine may suffer severe detonation/ping/knock or whater ever you call it. The computer will hear the knock and retard the timing right bck into the gas guzzler zone. Yet full throttle power will be fine. I've sen Ford EGR valves with the position feed back circuit way out of calibration. No exhaust into the engine but feed back said there was. Engine ran fine after some backyard EGR tweaking.

plugs wires. you can very carefully very carefully take apaprt the egr valve even though not "recommended and use simple green and torch tip cleaners (great to youse as you have many various sizes) simple green is great to use becasue it doesnt leave any residue like a normal soap would on your electrical sensors. just be darn careful darn careful you watch what your doign and dont lose any parts. the egr exhaust gas recirculation valve takes exhaust gas and puts it back to the intake to reburn exhaust lower emissions +if you put exhaust in the intake you get less new fuel and less new air generally less new fuel it will also run cooler as well. i dont think an egr would make you get ten that is absolutly terrible but possible. the egr gets gummed up w/carbon so just take it apart carefully and like i said you go to any garage and for cleaning throttle bodies anything they use simple green at least in this part of the country

I have heard of those 6 cyl. with a standard trans. get good mileage, but I also know of 2 of them with auto trans. that are poor like yours. You didn't mention which trans. you have ?

Both are 5 speeds, more in reply to Mike M, 12-31-2004 16:21:12
I cannot figure out why the newer Fords get the worse their mileage seems. You'd think a modern fuel injected engine would do better than a Carbureted 68 6 cyl, but no. Also the gearing on both is so high it is hard to start out in first without slipping the clutch too much, and fifth gear is seldom used except downhills . I miss my GMC 4.3 4 x 4.. it got close to 20 highway empty. Maybe someday I will put a second 700r4 in it and drive it again.

I have a 95 F-150 short bed 4.9, 5 spd. I average about 15 mpg around town and as high as 21 highway when empty. I towed a 28 foot,6600 lb camper from MA to ME this summer and got about 10 mpg. I don't think that the EGR will affect your mileage as it's function is to reduce NOX emissions. HTH.

I used to have a 1992 F-150 with the 4.9L 6 cylinder, with the manual trans. I would always get 17-18MPG. I even got 20 once when I was going real lightly. I got rid of the truck last year.

Truck, I have 93 ford 150 6 cylinder [4.9} fuel injected with a 5 speed. Averages around 15 MPG . I used to get 20 MPG with my 83 150 that was carbuerated. As for the egr valve, I would'nt think that could hurt mpg that much. You do have to work a six pretty hard to tow anything. I have a Ford F450 with a 460 fuel injected, I pull 10000 lb trailer and get 10mpg Dave
