That's right George W visited my home town this week, I was not there but was when 9-11 occured just a couple of years ago. To all you guys who think Canadians don't support the US, think again. We are a nation of only 30 million people, a mere 10% of your numbers.

George was there maybe a bit late, but there to thank Halifax for taking in thousands of Americans, the morning 9-11 happened. Plane loads caught in the air between Europe and North America as events of the day happened. The morning after, Eastern Canadian Airports looked like the deck of an aircraft carrier. I am not an aircraft nor airport specialist, but people who are tell me they broke every rule in the book getting these people on the ground. These people were not shipped off to some two bit motel, hotel or arena. They for the most part were billeted in Halifax homes. Yes, sat in the comfort of someone's livingroom and phone their loved ones in the US to inform.

Why did this happen in Halifax. Halifax is in the flight path of international flights. Halifax almost a century before experienced a castrophy of the same magnitude as 9-11. Who came to help; NEW ENGLANDERS. The Halifax Explosion happened Dec 06 1917, killed 2,000 and injured 9,000. War was rageing in Europe. A Belgium relief ship the IMO and a French ship the Mont Blanc collided in Halifax Harbour. The French ship was loaded with explosives and headed for Europe and the war front. People who witnessed this and survived say the explosion emptied the harbour of water momentarily. You could actually see the entire floor of the harbour. The City of Boston and state of Mass dispatched a train load of doctors, nurces and medical supplies.

If you wish to know more, go to your favorite search engine, type in Halifax Explosion. I can tell you this, and I don't think you will see it written anywhere in history. Many in Nova Scotia believed this collision in Halifax Harbour was not an accident, but rather an act of terrorism. In 1917, Halifax was a very important supply link in the war effort.

Hugh, I've been to Halifax. 20 Years ago but I hope it hasn't changed much. It was the cleanest, easiest, most beautiful all around greatest city I've ever seen. I've seen most major US cities and a lot of Western European cities. It's always been a plan of mine to end up in Nova Scotia.

I suggest you visit a few of our cities before you get carried away praising GW and the US. Please don't advertise your home. It isn't necessary and could result in a Strip Mall complete with body modified morons in your very own neighborhood.

You're probably right. I'm still puking from "George W" and Halifax being used in the same paragraph.

Thank you for your post. I never knew about the explosion. Now I know. What you say about the media is so true. They have an "agenda" and will rewrite the news to forward their cause.

I don't doubt the hospitality. My wife's got kin in New Foundland and I've got a couple of friends in Ontario on the Rideau. They're all fine people who don't make politics an overwhelming part of there lives. If people didn't put so much stock in the TV set and spent more time just talking to folks they'd find a different world.

PS: I live in Northern NY and never really thought Canada was another country until the stricter border rules after 911. It was a place we went for a good beer. Well that was until I spent a couple weeks in Germany back in June, the beer there is definately better.

The officials nailed an atlas to the wall in the airport opened to the Canadian and US east coast. Complete with a large coloured arrow and the caption saying "you are here". Apparently almost every US person had no idea where Newfoundland or Nova Scotia is let alone St.John or Halifax. Most thought they had been diverted back to Europe somewhere. Or they wondered where those remote American states were. I wish the schools would teach world geography.

buickanddeere, that would be Saint John, New Brunswick and St. Johns, Newfoundland. We never abbreviate the Saint part of Saint John here in the Maritimes!! Btw, how is it going up there in Ontario?

Hugh - Thank heavens for a "down homer" to put things in perspective!!! We had the privilege to journey to the east coast for our honeymoon in 1969. Nicest people one could ever hope to meet, with their priorities absolutly right. Just wish that the rest of society would follow their example. Sad to say Hugh , that even most of younger Canada was not aware of the Halifax explosion until the recent CBC broadcast!! Just another example of how we tend to overlook our own great Canadian history ! Once again , thanks and a Merry Christmas Hugh.

This discussion may get censored as it mentions the President's name, 9-11, and indicates that Canadians support us. I'm worried.

Hugh, thank you for this post, as I had never heard of this disaster before. It's sad to know that so many lives can be lost so quickly. I think that today's MEDIA(my eyes and ears to the world) sensationlizes most events to suit their own selfish needs, ie. ratings, newspaper sales, etc. I also feel that both Canada and the United States are willing to help each other and can have a lasting relationship, no matter what bumps in the road occur to upset the norm. As always, I look forward to your posts, especialy the ones about plows. From the Land of Lincoln (Illinois), Happy Holidays! Jim Thurnau

Good morning Hugh, and thanks to you Canadians for your graciousness and help. No sniping about the customs and boarder from me, haven't made it up that far yet. Seems most Americans have been to Florida, but aint made it there either.

I will say this about US and Canada relations, we have better hockey teams. Just jokin. Big hockey fan, and if they ever startup again, can't wait. Last time I saw them Nordiques, was in Chicago knocking off my beloved Blackhawks 5 or 6 to 3 under the name of the Colorado Avalanche when we had a 3 to nothing lead in the first period. It was the last GAME we made it to the playoffs. Yep, was dead center in the first row of the first balcony behind Patrick Roy for the first and third period, not letting him forget that his mother wears combat boots. He seemed to point his stick at me everytime he blocked one of our shots. I kept it clean, but guess I made him madder than I should've - we got smoked. LOL.

Have a good day Hugh, Mark.

When my wife and I visited Halifax in '99, I met an older fellow who was in his 80's through my cousin. This gentleman was 3 years old when that explosion occurred and he was standing near a window in his home ( quite some ways from the harbor) and was unforunately blinded (totally) from flying glass. Anyways, during his working life, he was a mechanic for the fleet of city trucks and cars for the city of Halifax and was into old cars as a hobby. I saw the car he restored, can't remember the make or model but it was something from the 20's. He did quite a job and when I was there, he was replacing some electrical parts under the hood, a set of points I believe. Just shows what a guy can do despite being handicapped like that. And as for the protesters, I found them to be somewhat of an embarassment. I think you can protest anything you wish but at least have the courtesy to behave. And of course, all the problems with the cross-border trading (BSE, softwood lumber, etc) is more of a corporate/business thing than political I think. Anyways, yours was an interesting post.

Hugh,

You certainly know my feelings about (most) Canadians, and they are nothing but good! The hospitality I've been shown in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan has been outstanding. I haven't explored Ontario or Manitoba yet, and there are a couple of far-flung areas to the great north that I haven't seen, but it's all been great.

Oh, I shouldn't forget the cheese maker in NS and the good friend that helped me locate him, should I?

Have a great day,

Stan

Hugh I could get into a long discussion about the Media, But I won"t. I will just say from a redneck hillbilly right here in the heart of the Ozarks. Thank you my Canadian friend. I think for the most part the people of the two countrys like each other. Jim

Jim: No question, most Canadians and Americans are quite close friends. In the past week or so there has been a lot of snipeing on YT over border, customs, etc. I'd be willing to bet most of the guys doing this have never been to the other's country. I do hope this thread does enlighten these people a bit. That is clearly my goal.

Canadians like Americans are entitled & free to express their own opinions. The fact that they may or not see things differently doesn't mean that they should or are perceived as non-humanitarian. As long Coors allows Molson to continue to make that fine Canadian beer, I think we can all get along….

You can bet news sources like CNN are going to show the wacko's protesting on the street. Because it makes good news! As it turned out there was no were near as many protesters as the anti busher's forcasted. They were talking like 20,000 people and only 5000 turned out and didn't do much

I wonder if CNN showed the footage of the Canadians waving american flags welcoming the bush's to Canada?

Hugh,

Very interesting post, I had never heard of the Halifax Explosion. I am happy W went north to properly thank your people for their kindness and it's always pleasant to hear from our northern neighbors who are in support of our (the US) actions currently under way.

My best to you and yours,

Dug

Thank you for sharing this. I had not heard about the Halifax explosion. I, for one, have never thought that all of Canada was against us. Many of my best friends are Canadian and I love to visit the country. I havent made it to the eastern half but certainly have fallen in love with the western part of the country. Perhaps I should visit the eastern part, and learn more. Once again, thanks for posting!
