I am looking to replace my bush hog tractor. Right now I am and have been using an old Farmall C which is pretty bare bones as far as features go. I want to use a 6 foot bush hog with the new tractor. It will have to be used since I only have about six thousand to spend. What I would like to know is what specific features should I be looking for in both the bush hog and the tractor. I would also appreciate brand and model suggestions for each.
Thanks for the help, Ed

Any decent 45 hp and up tractor with live pto and hyd and 3pt and wide front end will work fine for this job. have driven almost all brands of tractors from 30hp to 400hp. so don't get in hurry look around you have plenty of time before it's time to mow. Right now cases seem to be going cheap at least around here everybody wants green. But if your are patient for 6 grand you can find a nice tractor and chopper and stay away from cheap or choppers with light steel decks watch for sales you can sometimes find a ugly well built chopper for 5-600 bucks and 1st thing to do is grab pto shaft on mower and turn it several times, those boys in auction truck will stick to anybody and say it a good one and then you find later it's junk, F-inlaw found out the hard way he thought the man in truck was the most honest man on earth good luck don't buy junk

Try to find a used low profile tractor that was used for mowing. Institutions, schools, government agencies, etc. Ford had a big share of that market. They are almost indestructible, parts all over the place, will go under trees, will not tip over (they'll slide sideways first), are easy to handle, easy to fix, etc.

First off you want/need live PTO saves a lot of headaches, also makes it safer. Next depends on what you like or cost, I like a heavy hog. I cut a lot of small trees and a heavy one seems to stand up better. Also depending on land etc. A trike tractor works very well because of being able to turn faster but isn't good on hilly ground. I use an Oliver 77 for my place has the power and live PTO. but no 3 point. I have both tractor and hog for sale now, tractor is an Oliver77 and brush hog is 6ft and its a true brush hog. Both ugly but work well. e-mail me if you want more info

First I think there was just a big discussion on Brush cutters. You may want to look back a few days and see if you can find it.

I think you have answered your own question though by calling a brush cutter a bush hog. Bush hog is a brand name but so popular that people think that is what the piece of equipment is called. For me stay with the name brands and stay away from the cheap stuff. A brush cutter takes a lot of abuse so you need a good one.
Bush hog and Woods come to mind.

To run a brush cutter you will want a live PTO. You can get a over running clutch for a non live PTO tractor but just go ahead and get what you need now.
Not to start a color war but I like Ford and MF.
For a Ford you will need a
860 comes with gas engine only
861 gas or diesel
These will both have a 5 speed trans and two stage clutch for live PTO. Good shape is $3500 and up to about $5000 for excellent shape.
The SOS trans has live PTO but I do not like it because parts are hard to get.

Then you move up to the 2000; 3000; 4000; Fords.
You need the model # to see if it has live PTO.
Price starts at about $3500 and goes up to about $7000 depending on how new it is.

The MF 35; 135 and 235 are also good choices. About $3500 on up depending how new it is.

Massey Ferguseun 135 with a King kutter mower You want live PTO ans Hydraulics of which the Massey has both and parts are readily availble. King Kutter is a low cost brand that is not cheaply built while not the best it is adequate for most small landholders use. I probably would not try to use it commercially but for your budget you need to compromise a bit.
