We hit are first night of freezing temps and it got me to thinking... What things should I NOT have in my garage during freezing temps? What do you guys do to prepare for winter time in your non-heated workshops?

I have a bunch of latex interior paint that I am going to use to paint my house stored in the garage. Will the freeze damage it?

Thanks

Phil

Speaking from experience, you definitely don't want to leave latex paint in your garage. It will separate and you will not be able to get it mixed again. I've heard that latex caulk can also be damaged by freezing, but I've never had a problem; it must need to get a lot colder.

I haven't run into problems with anything else freezing, although my garage doesn't get that cold, maybe 25F. In Maryland, I wouldn't expect you to have any problems as long as you bring in the latex paint.

Anything that will freeze, latex paints, waterbased cleaners(Windex,ArmorAll,)car waxes etc. Many mfgs state that batteries on cordless tools should not be subjected to freezing temps,or at the least charging while cold.Batteries from unused lawn mowers, boats, cycles etc, should be stored where warm offseason and occaisionally trickle charged.
Another option is to put these items inside an old(unplugged)fridge an hang a lightbulb inside.I do this and use a heat tape thermostat on the cord. When temps drop below freezing, the bulb comes on and keeps the inside of the fridge warm.If I recall right,a 75w cost me about 5.oo mo(24/7)w/o the thermostat and about 3.oo with a few yrs back.

The bulb idea is a good one and can be used in alot of types of cabinets. I have gone a little farther and added a dimmer
switch to control the amount of heat it puts off.
Remember, you just need to keep it above freezing.
