I put this on the Truck talk board and got some good responses, But I know there are quite afew Small Block experts here. I've got a 305 out of a '91 Caprice that I will be putting into a '91 Caprice. It has throttle body injection and is computer controlled, of course. I'm looking for some cheap easy horsepower mods, is there a different throttle body I can use? Any other tricks, besides going to a 350?

That 305 is a small block animal all to itself, a one of a kind, of sorts.

I've gotten rid of just about everything on big and small blocks. But as I recall, that 305 was all stroke, no bore. If bored .060 over, would still be the smallest bore small block in existance. As I recall, still smaller than the 262 that Chevy put out in the mid to late 70's used in the Monza (think only the Monza).

My neighbor had a 305 in his '83 suburban, when tired out, he replaced with a 350. Core on the 305 was like $50 from Jasper, so I paid it just so I could toy around with that thing. Stupid block weighed more than could get horse power out of the motor, without putting some $$$ into it that would never pay for itself. A big wind came along and blew his shed over, so he put bricks around 3 corners before ran out of bricks. Hmm? Just so happens I had the perfect weight, and that's where that 305 sets today, where it belongs, holding his shed down.

Don't put much $$$ into that thing, it's a torque (stroke) motor, not a horsepower (bore) motor. And a gas hog without a reason. Aint worth it.

Not a whole lot you can do to the TBI system. I dont think the early TBI electonic control was as flexable as they are today. If you have to stick with it, find a machine shop that specializes in head porting. Free flowing exhaust, headers if possible. You change too much, you freak out the computer and will need special chip programing to compensate for all the changes. I think the best bang for your buck is having some head work, a good dual exhaust, headers if you plan on high rpm (drag racing?) and a high performance 4bbl intake manifold, using the tbi adaptor you will find in the link below. The TBI wont flow as much cfm as a real 4bbl, but the 4bbl manifold itself will flow better than the stock TBI manifold. There are a couple of other power goodies there to check out too. If you dont want to pull the heads, I'd at least check out the 4bbl manifold, dual exhaust, and some of the flow goodies in the link. This might be one of many web sites. Do a google search on "gm tbi preformance". Good luck with your project.

Chevy High Performance did a 305 build up that is still going on. Guy has a station wagon that he uses for drag racing in some class. Also, the past few months they did a build up of a 305 ci truck I believe.

The most HP per dollar is a set of free flowing cylinder heads. There are several manufactures of free breathing light weight aluminium heads. Ready to run out of the box and don't cost much more than a 100% rebuild and porting of the old heads. No replacement for displacement. GM has some high HP crate engines with warrenty that are better than 99% of rebuilds. Headers, cam, Holley throttle body and some tuning. A high stall lock-up torque convertor with a 7004R transmission will cut several 10th's off the 1/4 mile without needing extra HP. Won't be a gas hog either. Improving 0 to 30 MPH acceleration gives the best "feel" and cuts the 1/4 mile times the most. Lbs per HP count too. A mild engine in a Monte Carlo will out run a high HP engine in the Caprice.

The engine you have is likely the LO3 option code, it was the base 305 used in the RS Camaro and Firebird those years. Hardly a barn-burner, I think it was rated at 170 horsepower. Try www.thirdgen.org and read the TBI tech board- don't mention this is in a Caprice, they are real specific about keeping the topics third gen Camaro/Firebird related.

However, they do respond well to bolt on mods. Any cam change more than slight will require chip tuning. Try www.tbichips.com several people have used him with good results.

Keep in mind you have a small cube engine pushing a heavy full size Caprice, so try to maximize low end torque with your bolt ons.

If you have to go into the short block it's not worth it, a 350 is the same money to build and core blocks are plentiful.

Also headers and less restrictive exhaust will depend on what if any emissions testing you have in your area.

Notice my name. It comes from Corvette. Mine has a TBI 350. 1. I would not use a 305. 350's are readily available. Much more power.
2. I have a Holley 750 throttle body. It's available for your setup.
3. Here's a list of my other mods: a. MSD 6 Ignition b. Hedman Headers c. Modified computer chip matched to mods, many companies offer this d. Edlebrock cam and manifold e. Custom exhaust
All this has made one quick car. I'm really an old guy like most of the rest of you. This was an adventure in having a fast car I never had as a kid. I know its faster than the wifes GT Mustang. But I'm just enjoying it, not trying to prove anything. Hope this helps and I'll be glad to answer any other questions you have about it.

Headers? Other exhaust work. Cam, Intake, heads. Switch to multiport injection. Power chip? The options are just about limitless. There is only one catch.....money. Carcraft or Hotrod mag's are good to get. Lots of stories and how to's. Lots of adds for parts suppliers too. Giv'er.

Put a 180 deg. thermostat in it. TBIs get real lean when they get warmed up....your mileage will suffer, however.

One of the "car hobby" magazines, probably Car Craft, has done some hopping up of 305's. You might want to check out their website, or look through someone's back issues from the last 2 years, or so.

What have you done so far?

My Ideas:
Port and polish the intake and exhaust ports
New Cams
Less restrictive intake manifold
