hi i need to mow a farm and am looking for a tractor. I need to mow about 4ft of grass ad am wondering what would be a better tractor to do it with. i can get ford 3000 for $3500 with a 5ft brush hog.I can also get a Allis wd45 for $2000. they are both in excelleent condition and run well. The ford 3000 series suposidly have problems with the clutch and selecto-speed, but the allis will need to be converted to a 3pt hitch so im not sure what would work the best and be the best deal? please leave any info. thank you

I prefer to brush hog with my Allis WD over our Ford NAA because the seat is much higher. I couldn't believe how much less bits flew back at me perched up there. And the seat rotates, so it's a lot easier on the back. And sitting higher gives me better visibility looking forward/down too. Last Spring I killed a fawn on the Ford hoggin. My 2 cents.

Not sure about fords have not run one.

AC I use a wd about a 1952 to brush hog. We're talking brush and grass etc. from weed to 2" trees. I run her hard sometimes and she for the most part does very good. I run in 3 rd to cut 4 ft. grass but if very thick 2nd. . If your in 3rd and run into a thick spot you use the hand clutch ( trans.) to make live pto. No need to worry about that clutch it is in oil, can be played as much as needed. Put make sure it is in good working order if not you need to see why( e-mail me,if you go with wd and I'll explain) . MAKE SURE PTO IS IN GOOD SHAPE MAKE THE SELL STAND BEHINED IT 100% . They can be bad and not fun to work on prices gear box 100 and up pto shaft same and bearing about 25-100.
I would say as long as tractor is in good shape enghine wise it is one of the best for cutting. Wd only has 35 to the 45's 45hp. I use a wood 5' brush hog some 35yrs old, cut about 50 - 100 acres a yr. for custom work.

Condition is everything when you are talking about a 50 year old tractor (the 45) & a forty year old one ( the 3000). In those 10 years, there were some advancements-more diesels, hydraulics, PTO features, hitches. For straight mowing, you'll like the ford & love the Allis.

Does the 3000 you are looking at have Select-O-Speed? If so, does it work properly? If it is working like it should, fine. If not, that tractor is best left to an expert. The WD-45 is a good old tractor, simple, reliable, easy to work on and awkward to drive. It does NOT have "independent" pto but it does have a form of "live" pto. All Ford Select-o-Speeds have independent pto. Gear drive models may or may not have live pto. Either live or independent is a definite advantage when doing pto work in the field.

I like AC tractors! But, if you can get a good Ford 3000 with brush hog for $3500, and you are going to have to pay $2000 for an AC WD45, the Ford is the way to go. An WD45 should a wide front and be in top notch condition to bring $2000. It could cost you up to $300 for a 3 point conversion. The WD45 has independent PTO and hydraulics through the hand clutch. If the Ford has independent PTO and hydraulics I think you ought to go with the Ford if it is in good shape. I wouldn"t recomend older Fords over an AC WD45, but I think in this case the Ford is probably the way to go.

I'm sure there will be dissagreement but as it seems you are relatively new to the tractor thang I think my advice to you would be to look around at your neighbors and see what they are running and what makes'models you can get service and parts for localy. The cheapest machine is no good if you can't get parts. Here JD and Case IH. Forty miles from here and it is Allis and IH sixty miles and Ford is king. If you have a good friend with a tractor ask him... you may be bugging him to help you fix what you have one day. In the Allis line I don't think anyone can go wrong with a D-17 Still cheap and live power too. IH 560s are a dime a doz and great machines. JD (all way to pricy but good machines) 4020. These are a littlle bigger than you talked of but if you are only wanting one tractor to do everything including mow, these most fit the bill and are modern enough to be handy and still are (except for the green ones) affordable. Power steering is very nice to have when mowing. So goes my 2c

I got to agree with ya, Sloroll, a cheap tractor is not worth a plug nickel if ya get it home, then need work and have to haul it a couple hundred miles to fix it. A few trips like that and you have the differance in price. So I would look at what service is in your area and make a decision from there.

Emil;

Go weth the 3000 if those are your only choices. Other wise look around some and see what is out there. They are both good tractors.
