Sea going containers

Been thinking about adding some more storage around here. One of those 20ft sea containers may be just the ticket.

1) So how much should I look to spend on one of the 20ft containers. I see them selling at the auction some times but never really paid them no mind.

2) Is there another outlet for buying these things outright or is the local tractor auction my best bet.

3) How would I have it delivered and set where I want it. A roll back truck seems logical but it is most likely to wide (8 ft) and to high for one of those roll back wreckers. If I had it brought in on a low boy how do I get it off and placed short of renting a crane or track hoe.

Thanks

John I bought one here in sunny southern Arizona for $1750.00 delivered. The guy here gets truckers to bring them in for the price of the fuel between here and San Diego. I only have one set up for now. It sure made me a nice little shop.

John,
Check behind your Wal Mart. They are a heavy user of a container vendor for storage. There is a number on those containers with a sale or rent ad. They move them in and out all the time.

I know a guy that bought 2. Set them about 40 feet apart and built a shed using them as 2 of the walls. Worked out pretty neat. At least it was different.

Thanks Mark;
That is exactly what I want to do. Get 2 8ft X 20ft containers and put them 14ft apart. Pour a slab between them. Cut out one side (slab side) and put a roof over the center part and close up ends.
This will give me a 20 X 30 shed.

(If I can get them at the right price might just use 3 next to one another.)

Seems like a good idea to me. This guy is about 75 miles away so getting some pics of his rig is not really practical. But I had the thought anyway.

I've seen that done with old railroad cars too. Looks kind of like an old corn crib, equipment in the middle and storage on both sides. Buy or build some 25' trusses and it goes togather pretty fast. Just make sure they are "seated" well on some kind of foundation.

You have the idea and the reasoning behind it. He's in a semi remote area and it makes for locking up your things real good too.

You might watch what your are getting. I bought one, 53ft long, cost about 2000.00. The thing I looked at is was this a ocean container or inland. I was told be several people to kinda watch the ocean containers because of the salt water will start corrosion. The inland containers don't see salt water or salt air, so the do not have the corrosion involved. Do not know if there is any truth to this, but this is what I was told. The company I bought mine off delivered it to my sight and sat it where I wanted it.

John,

I don't know how close you are to New Orleans, but that's where you can get them cheap. With our trade surplus, many more container ships coming in with them than going out. Out in NO east I see piles of them along the Industrial Canal.

Along I-10 west of Mobile, there's another place that sells them too. Basically, any port that handles container ships will likely have a local surplus and someone trying to get rid of them.....

I am very close to N.O.
Live just north of the lake now but grew up in Metairie. (suburb of N.O.)
I see them at equipment auctions all the time but will check into the sales at the container yard.
Thanks.

You need to call railroads and shipping companys about there auctions coming up in your area. you can buy them from $300 and up depending what it looks like,to ones that have been dropped go cheap. As far as hauling any implement trailer(semi dropdeck), will work and you just raise bed up and pull out and drop it where you want simple. to find them sales usually are in the large citys , in rail yards or on shipping co lots buy a bunch of them they pay for them selves quick as portable storage units and easy to sell good luck.
