Generator/Regulator charging questions

The "amp" gauge on my D-19 hasn't been showing a charge lately. When I pull out the light switch and the lights come on, it shows a discharge, but other wise doesn't move. Checked the generator out and it is putting out a charge. Cleaned the ground and the connections on the regulator. When I short between the battery and generator terminals it causes the gauge to show a discharge. If it is the regulator, wouldn't it cause the gauge to show a positive charge? Don't get a response on the gauge when I short between the F terminal and ground.

I put a lead off my test meter to one of the wires going to the gauge and grounded the other test lead to the tractor and got a reading. Then did the same to the wire going to the other side of the gauge and got the same reading. Does this mean that there is a charge going thru the gauge but it just isn't showing it? I'm kind of lost here. If the regulator was bad, would I get any type of reading at the guage with my meter? Any help or direction would be appreciated.
Thanks
Wil

If after polorizing the gen and you ground the generator field terminal and it doesent charge your gen is bad and needs rebuilding.

How do you polarize the generator? in reply to gene b, 09-08-2004 01:49:31
Can you go over how to polarize the generator? I did get a reading from the generator when I grounded the F terminal and hooked my tester up to the A terminal and the other lead to a ground. What throws me is the reading at the gauge and when I shorted between the generator and battery terminals with the tractor running and got a negative reading on the amp gauge.

Thanks for the help.

Wil -
To Polarize the generator, just take a short piece of wire, and short accross the "BAT" on the regulator to the "GEN" or "ARM" post of the generator, without the tractor running. It should spark when you do this.

The "BAT" terminal / wire should always be hot.

Assuming the tractor is wired correctly you can bypass the regulator to make sure the generator is charging by doing the following:

First: You have to have a good ground with both the generator AND the regulator. Use your meter to make sure you have both well grounded. If in doubt, run a dedicated wire from your battery ground to the regulator case. Also, make sure you have a hot battery, and the belt is tight.

Next: Polarize using method described. You should get a spark when you do this. If you don't something is wrong.

Next: With engine running, ground the field post to a good ground and see if it charges on the ampmeter.

Next: if it still doesnt charge, leave the field post grounded and jump the V.R. "BAT" to the generators "GEN (or "ARM") terminal. This completly bypasses the V.R. and if the generator is working, you should get a good positive charge on your ammeter.

If it still doesnt charge you have incorrect wiring, or a bad generator.

If it does charge, the problem is likely in the V.R.

If you re-wired the tractor recently, and the polarizing did not do it, you may have to reverse the wires on the ammeter.

Post back and let us know.

Polarize the generator.
