OK...I'll admit I'm pretty dumb when it comes to somethings...and this is one of them. I live just a few miles from the site where the "National Plowing Contest" will be held this weekend, so by tomorrow night I'll be an expert (x=THE UNKNOWN + spurt=DRIP UNDER PRESSURE)on the subject. But right now, I'm wondering just what this contest is? Do they compete against each other, or against the clock, or is it judged? They have announced that the winner of the contest will go to the Czech Republic to compete in the World Contest. So, is there only one national winner that will be crowned champion?
Thanks for humoring an old dealer (antiques)!

Rauville: I presume you are refering to US plowing championships. I have never followed the world or your plowing matches. You may find one champion per class per country.

Here in Canada at our national plowing match they have several classes. I don't know them all, but they have catergories like modern, antique, horse plowing, speciality plows like roll over plows, etc.

You should take in one national plowing match in your lifetime. It is a learning experience. I wont say it will turn you into an overnight plowing expert. You probably will not see much practical plowing for every day farming. What you will see is just how complex the plow is and all the factors that make it do good plowing.

The best thing to do is go along and have a look.
Your questions answered: Yes, it is a competition between individuals.
Yes, they compete against each other.
Yes, it is against the clock - or better to say each part of the competition is time-constrained as they all must get done on the same day! There is usually adequate time unless there is a hitch -like something breaking down.
Yes, it is judged - for several criteria and the points awarded for each aspect are added up to arrive at one winner.
Yes, only one entrant per country will be allowed to compete in the world champs ie - the best!
