Go narrow and a very large blower section.

Last winter we bought an IH 80 snow blower that is 86" wide and in wet snow it would pull down a 150 hp tractor. The big issue like the others have said is having a very slow reverse gear, for next year I'd like to put ours on the loader tractor so I can use the loader to slowly push the tractor back into bigger drifts.

Do you mean wheelbase or width of the tractor? Wheelbase is the distance from the center of the front axle to the center of the rear axle. Can you make the tractor narrower?

Speed becomes the issue. How slow is your slowest reverse? Also, you need to have a live pto. Then you"ll be fine.

I run a 7" blower on my 27 hp compact. Works fine, need to clutch once in a while, but a real slow reverse & it works fine. Same blower with the 85hp tractor & I still need to clutch - plenty of power, but the snow just doesn"t clear away fast enough for the speed moving....

The manufacturer of each blower will tell you what category and HP they recommend to operate their equipment without tearing up your tractor.

GA,

Last year was my first year dealing with the snowblowers. These things are the best thing since sliced bread!

I've read a lot on here about folks being concerned about horsepower vs the width of the cut. That wasn't what I ran into; seemed like the weight of the tractor, ballast & traction was the bigger issue for me.

So, I'd go with the bigger one of the two.

This year, I'm gonna try a dual auger 8 footer with 65 horse even tho they call for 80 hp.

And doggone it! If it doesn't work, I just might have to get a bigger tractor..... Aw, Shucks! :>)
