In the early 70's, my older brother ran my Dad's 8N out of oil and threw the rod. It was quickly repaired. Now, 2004, I own the tractor, repaird block and all. No problems. By the way, the block was brazed, dont think it got into the water jacket. Philip.

If I could be reasonably sure the engine is not leaking water internally (from another crack), and the external weld looked professionally done, and leak-free, I wouldn't have a problem buying it. There are MANY machines still out working, earning their keep, that have had the water jackets cracked and welded.

It would be a good idea to know that then engine had not been run for at least overnight, and then slightly loosen the oil drain plug, to see if any water has settled to the bottom of the oil.

I suppose it would depend on the asking price. What condition is the rest of the tractor? If the tires, sheetmetal, etc. are good, and the price is discounted to reflect the welded block, then you may be ok. The tractor would have to be dirt cheap before I would consider it.
