I recently purchased a 1942 Farmall A, I find that it will easily start and run for hours. If I stop and turn it off, I can not restart for hours. The tractor will turn over but not start. It has a magnito and have spark, new points, plugs and spark at the plugs.

Any sugestions?

When mine did that I put a cap and rotor on the mag, that took care of the problem. The engine was wore out I got tired of parking on a hill and rolling it down the hill to start it, (the starter wouldn't turn it fast enough to start it). I rebuilt the engine and not had any problems since. It is still 6 volt and starts in any weather. If it is to cold out to start it is to cold for me to be outside. It takes a good engine with the up draft fuel system.

check compression. if valves are bad it will start when cold but not when hot. not sure what comp. should be, but somewhere near 80 or 90 lbs. good luck and let us know what you find. wally

I take it to have a spark when it will not start? If it does, then it is probably fuel related. What colour are the plugs running? May be a leak into the inlet manifold while it is hot. Could you have a vapour lock in the fuel supply pipe?
Does the mag have an impulse coupling? If so, does it work both hot and cold?
Hope this helps.

I thought it may be a vapor lock in the fuel supply, any idea on how to check or fix?
