Hello All,

I was wondering if it is advisable, or not, to use a gasket sealer on a head gasket?

Thanks!

Randy,

Most gaskets these days don't use a sealer. Just make sure both surfaces are clean and dry. Also, some manufacturers require the head bolts to be re-torqued after running a certain number of hours. Some also say lubricate the bolts with oil and some say don't. A lot of the Perkins and Deutz engines I work on use a torque angle in degrees in addition to a torque figure. As the others have said, get a manual!

If your using the composite gasket, they usually don't require any sealer. If it's a steel gasket it's normally recommended you use the "copper coating" sealant or similar type sealant.

I've used "Hylomar" with good results. It's a non-hardening gasket dressing. Do a net search...should be plenty of info. about it out there.

"Hylomar" is good, so is "Copper-Coat".

Another method is simply to spray a light coat of aluminium spray paint on the gasket, and wait til its nearly dried before assembling the head to the block and torquing down the head bolts or nuts.

Some makes of head gaskets had a plastic material applied to serve as a sealant, and the gasket set boxes for those will be marked "do not use a sealant".

cheers

Carla

This topic has been addressed on here a few times that I can remember. Many head gaskets require no sealer, but there are a few out there that the manufacturer actually recommends it. So the only safe thing to do is to get hold of a service manual for your machine/engine and see what is recommended. If you don't have access to a manual be a little more specific about what your working on and your gonna be more likely to get a definite answer off here than you are with a general question.

Get the recommendation of the GASKET manufacturer. Some call for a sealant, some do not.

This is the correct answer. The reason is that gasket technology has changed dramatically since many of there tractors and cars/trucks were built. Most modern gaskets are coated with either silicone or teflon. If you use sealer with these you destroy the gasket and maybe even the engine via a coolant leak into the crankcase.

If you use a gasket that requires sealer and you decide to use aluminum paint, be very careful. There are two types of aluminum paint, one contains real aluminum, the other little plastic balls that look like aluminum.
