JD starter won't spin

Glad I found this forum...looks like there are a lot of knowledgeable people here. I have a 1988 JD RX75 rear-engine lawn mower with a starter that won't spin. I've taken the starter off the block, hooked it up to my car's battery with jumper cables, and it wouldn't move unless I tapped on it with a heavy wrench. It spun a few times, then stopped. Now it just sort of 'nudges' when I tap on it. Any ideas what might be wrong with the starter? I want to try to fix it myself if I can pin down the problem. I really don't want to pay the $245 John Deere wants for a new starter (I paid less than that for the mower) and I haven't seen any cheaper ones for my model anywhere else.

THANKS.

Many small engine starters use ceramic permanent magnets for the fields. They are epoxied to the inside of the starter "belly", and sometimes the glue lets go, and the starter acts like yours.

Also, on this type of starter, any hammering on the "belly" can break the magnets loose, or shatter them, if they're not already loose.

Some small engine starters even have little warning decals on them warning against hammering on them!

So, as the other poster said, you may have brush problems, or you may have the magnet problem I mentioned.

Isn't it funny how you can buy a starter for a 454 Chevy for $100 but a puny little JD junk starter is $245. Hmmm.

Anyway, www.jackssmallengines.com may be a source. Or a local small engine shop may replace the brushes. Some cities have "starter/alternator" repair/rebuilding places (check your phone book) that can also repair them.

Sounds like the brushes are worn down too low or perhaps sticking in the holder.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

Okay, I opened up the starter and checked the brushes. They don't look too bad...there's still contact, but I might try replacing them.

Here's my new problem...after putting the starter back together, I now have contact between the 12v+ cable and the body of the starter. If I connect one end of a continuity tester to the cable and put the other end of the tester on the body, it reads positive. I actually found this out by connecting the positive lead to the battery and grounding the starter...some nice sparks.

See the link below for reference.

Thanks again. It's great to have so many people willing to help.

Aaron,
Youre going to read ground through the starter wire if the brushes are touching the armature. That's normal, If it won't turn now when you hook juice to it you have a dead short. If that's the case pull it back apart and look at the pos brush lead and make sure it isn't touching the case, or the spring for it is'nt touching the case or one of the thru-bolts.
Hope this helps, jstpa

jstpa,
The brush lead and spring aren't touching the case. When I have the starter apart, everything tests fine (+ and - test as they should when I have the base, brush holder, and case together). Once I put the armature into the case, though, the case has a reads + for 12v. Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Aaron

Aaron,
I'm not sure if I'm following your description correctly or not, but you will read continuity through the batt wire to the case normally. The armature has both the ground brush and the positive brush touching it, since all the commutator bars in the armature are connected to each other you will read through the positve brush through the armature to the negative brush which is grounded. The only other variable is that your armature is dead shorted, which you would check by hooking to the commutator and then to the shaft. hope this helps. jstpa
