I have a gear-drive 40HP Kubota and a JD 6000 series 85 HP gear drive tractor. I had planned to buy Castrol hyd trans fluid at $33 per five gal but wonder about Sam's Club at $19.
Am I being penney wise and pound foolish to buy Wal-Mart or should I stay with the Castrol? I usually try to go with the best buy I don't want to throw $$ away if I don't have to. Any advice helpful. Thanks.

This is a case where I'd go for the OEM product. I don't know what the price is to compare, but your JD calls for Hy-Gard. On the other hand, I do know that major pieces and parts for your Deere aren't going to be available from Wal-Mart and will cost you big time if the discount stuff allows premature wear to occur.

Any brand that meets the manufacturer's specifications will be fine. If you feel more comfortable with your favorite brand name of oil that's fine fine but what you really need to do is meet the spec!

Probably the same corner of the Arab world that Castrol comes from.

Just keep in mind, the best money you will ever invest is in the proper lubricant for your tractors. Saving a few dollars can result in spending big money in repairs in the future. The additive package in the combination type hydrolic/transmission/diff fluid required depends on things like wet brakes, construction of pumps, etc. Make sure the spec list contains your tractor manual's exact spec number.

Any oil, if it meets JD and Kubota specs, should be all right, at least in theory. Myself, I'm leery of the off brand cheap stuff. You might check with your local JD dealer, the Hy-Gard might be less money than Castrol, and you know it will be the right stuff. Hy-Gard will be correct for the Kubota, too.

PWOG,

I've been using the Tech 2000 universal hydraulic oil in my Cat D6 clutch, hydraulic, and steering system for several years now with no problems. I also use it in my MF 240 tractor with the same results. I also use the 30W motor oil in my equipment. Just make sure it meets specs; it will say on the back. They have two types at my Wal-mart; the EP (extreme pressure) type oil for wet brakes and clutches (the one I use) and the one that is rated for EP but not wet brakes and clutches. It is strictly a hydraulic oil and not designed for the brakes and clutches.

there is no problem is you are comparing apples to apples. is this "universal hydraulic trans fluid" of one of the specific hytrans fluids. look at the spec on the back and it will tell you which company "specs" it meets.
