Is there a 4WD kit for a Ford 3000?

I'm looking at picking up an overhauled Ford 3000 pretty soon, and I'd like to do a couple of mods to it if they aren't too expensive. I want to do most or all of these mods myself, if possible. I do have very limited knowledge as far as working on these engines, but I think it would be a great learning experience.

1.) Install 4WD conversion kit (selectable). I'm curious if there's one made specifically for this tractor.

2.) Install power-steering if it doesn't already have it.

3.) Install a loader like an Ezee-On 2060. I've also heard good things about Koykers, but I don't have any first-hand experience with them.

4.) Live PTO. I have no clue how to do this, but it would be a terrific learning experience.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me.

Thanks in adv.!!

If you have the $$$$ and friends in Europe a mfd system can be found. Companies like County,Roadless,Selene installed them on the smaller Fords. You might also get lucky and find a junked one in Quebec. Check out Classic Tractor Magazine,it might have something in it about what you are looking for.

Do yourself a huge favor... buy a tractor with all the features you desire and tinker with it first.

That's the problem though. These tractors never come stock with 4wd as far as I know. I have tinkered with Ford 2000s, 2600s, 3000s, 3055s, 3600s, 4000s, etc. but never really seriously. Some had power steering, some had loaders, some had live PTOs, etc.

I'm actually leaning more toward a 2600. At 33 PTO HP it should be just what I need. I am a little partial to these, as we just bought and sold one. It was a GEM.

Basically I want this to be a notch or so above the Japanese compact tractors, because parts are much cheaper on these Fords (not to mention the tractors themselves are way cheaper).

Another reason I want to do these mods to a 2600-esch tractor is because I'm a 16 year-old in college, and I'm looking for a project that would keep me busy over the winter. I can pick up a sharp tractor for cheap in the late Fall/early Winter and be able to do the modifications without a whole lot of overhead.

I very much appreciate your enthusiasm but you are looking at spending maybe $10K by the time you are all done and the tractor will still be worth what you paid for it.

If you can forget Fords for a while, there are lots of old tractors that have everything you seek. Example: all Olivers came with power steering, live hydraulics, live, independent PTO, and while the FWA (front-wheel assist) tractors are not common, the entire axle assembly can be swapped from a junker to your tractor. It's all hydraulically driven. The wide-front tractor is a great loader tractor and there are lots of Schwartz loaders at salvage yards that fit and work well.

Depending on where you live, a decent Oliver 1650 can be had for maybe $2,000-$3,000. It's got 66 hp, parts are available though pricey; they are as tough as an anvil, and very easy to work on.

In any event, good luck on your project!

Forget the 4wd thing. There is no reliable system you can buy and install. A sharp 2600 or similar that is cheap is a rare find. Adding power steering to a 2600 or similar is a $1000 project using OEM parts and half that for aftermarket. Fords with the 8N style front axle are poor choices for loader use.

"A sharp 2600 or similar that is cheap is a rare find."

Actually I know where I can get them for around $3800 or so, $4200 or so with power steering.

Tack on about $2800 for the loader; I still can't find a place that sells a 4wd system though, so I'm not sure how much to figure in there.

Overall I predict the project will cost me about $9K. When I'm through with it, it should be worth about $12K-$12.5K. I just sold an average-looking 3055 with an Ezee-On 2060 and no power-steering for $10.5K, and 4wds are wildly popular here.

I plan to do a whole lot of research before I delve into this project though.

I guess it is all in what you call cheap. Unless you are using Canadian dollars, I don't consider a $4200 2600 cheap. Anyone with even a modicum of tractor knowlege would shy away from a loader tractor with manual steering. I also don't think there is much of a market for $10,500 3055 TL's with manual steering. That is about double the market in this neck of the woods, and I live in the high rent district. Good luck.
