What Ron says is correct. However, just to expand a little, I believe the term "checked" or "checking" came from the lumber industry where separation of the growth rings in sawn lumber has always been referred to as "checking" as opposed to "splitting". It carried over to tires cracking as well. HTH, Glenn

Your post reminds me of a silly joke my dad used to tell. There was this fellow who went to the eye doctor because he was having some vision problems. After quickly going through about 5 minutes of testing, the doctor asked the fellow, "Have your eyes ever been checked"? The guy answered, "no, they've always been blue".

Or the one about the sales man asking the farmer,

"Have you lived here all your life?"

"No, not yet.", says the farmer. :>)

That means you don't want them.

It means they will have a tough time going on the highway, but will do just fine for another decade on your farm. :)

They might blow out as soon as you put air in them. This kid used to keep his F-14 up at my fathers place. He bought a old set of tires for $100. These tires had never been used, or even mounted, they showed vary light checking, You could hardly see it. About a week after he got them mounted onto his tractor. He was up at our local show towing a transport wagon from the parking lot to the grounds. Blew about a two foot rip in the side of one of the tires. Or I could tell you about the time I had a MT just setting in my driveway.

Over the years tires dry out and get little cracks in them. That's weather checked. As long as the cracks don't get down into the cord, it's just an appearance issue.
