My IH300 runs great, doesn't burn oil, however the tail pipe, and adjacent rear end areas seem to have more carbon deposits than what I would consider normal. Spark plugs also have carbon deposits. Would some of the mechanical experts care to comment? Also would be interested in the purpose of the dimple in the exhaust tail pipe. My uneducated guess would be that it's purpose would be to direct exhaust heat to the rear end to aid in winter time use warm up.

What temp does the coolant usually run at? What type of work does this machine do?

Too rich a mixture, too cold, wrong grade of plugs or not enough work to keep right grade clean. Remember, if plugs are getting sooted, so is the rest of the combustion chamber.

Jon, The carbon is likely due to overuse of the choke or some other reason to run too rich ,maybe carb needs adjusted,If tractor smokes black runnung too rich is the problem, if blue smoke then it is burning oil, What is the condition of your air cleaner?? what due you mean dimple in the tailpipe?
