I'm looking for a small tractor about the size of an 8N, but I need live pto, down pressure, 3 pt. hitch. I would like something that can handle a finish mower, grader blade, disc, plow, etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob

Gotta put in a plug for the Oliver 550 (or Super 55)- very similar in size and "nimbleness" of the 8N, but 39HP (550), independent PTO (which is better than the 2-stage clutch "live" PTO found on most tractors of that era), three point with draft control, and best of all, they are that very pleasant Meadow Green color :-)

You do not need down pressure. It is very rare on USA tractors, except older IHC Fast Hitch tractors which are converted to 3pt & often do not have as much range of motion as a true 3pt. It is more of a PIA for scraping, etc. than it is worth, that's why no one builds it.

Either buy a good post hole digger that has some bite not a cheapie, or put some weight on your disk, or put weight on your blade. Whatever it is you are doing, down pressure likely is not the answer.

Sorry but we have to disagree on this. Dad had bought a Belarus (new) back in 1980. It was a OK tractor. Had its +'s and -'s but once you get use to down pressure on a 3 point it is hard to go back.
Now if it had only down pressure like the riged home made kind that may be differant. You have to have float also for down pressure to be any good. Just like a dozer blade. Power up; power down; and float.

Are you digging with an auger and want the down pressure? or do you need it for the scaper blade?

You can get down pressure by rigging a hydrolic ram or buying an auger with the brackets in place for a ram.

IH utilities (which are now the Mahindras if you want to buy new...I wouldn't) are great little tractors. Plenty of power, especially the diesels, easy to handle and tougher than nails. Parts are every where, what I can't find at IH Case or Mahindra parts departments, NAPA carries.

I just got a set of belts for a Super A from NAPA, IH Case was out of them. Go figure.

My B 414 has live PTO, three point hitch with draft control and hydrolics added at the factory.
Handles a 6' rotary cutter, 6' blade, round bales, dragging stuff, and sips diesel at about a half gallon an hour. Not to shabby.

I agree completely. B414s are tough and compact.

Wayne, have you got one of these little jewels, too, or just a history with them?

Massey 135.

no down pressure though, but why do you need it? I cant think of much off hand that NEEDS down pressure. You can put more weight on if things strt to lift up, ie box blade.

The IH 300U series tractors do have down pressure & many have independent pto. Can handle 6' disk or 2 bottom plow(42 h.p.)Drawbacks are: need adapters for 2 point implement use(tractors came with fast-hitch)and can be hard to find with power steering. Good dependable tractors, let me know if you're interested in one! Will have one for sale in 1-2 weeks.

VERY FEW tractors have down pressure on the 3-point hitch, and I don't know offhand which do.

As far as a nice little Ford 'N sized tractor, I have a nice 424 IH diesel tractor. Very similar in size to the Fords, it's got nearly 40 HP, live PTO and hydraulics, and power steering. It also has differential lock. They were produced in the 1965 to 1967 era. All in all a very usefull little tractor, if you can find one. Most parts are readily available from CNH.

Mahindra bought out the design from Harvester years ago, and apparently still makes a very similar tractor, supposedly something like 80% of the parts are still the same. I bought some PTO control lever parts from CNH earlier this year, and they were stamped "Made in India"! I don't know, however, what current Mahindra model number is.
