Here's a picture of the 3524 Cat diesel I mentioned in the earlier post. Nowhere near as big as the ship engine but still pretty impressive. This engine is actually two 3512 engines coupled together, it produces about 3500 hp.

For comparison, a D11R dozer runs a 3508 engine. The '3500' is the engine series (based on cylinder displacement), the '08', '12', '24' is the number of cylinders.

This engine is impressive, plain and simple, who cares who's making it..... .
Still I don't understand why they can't use a conventional style boiler/steam turbine setup or even a gas turbine setup. Both systems can deliever way more HP out of a smaller package and with the proper gearing can give just as much torque at the prop.

The cheap & simple turbo two stroke diesel is more effient than even than most of the complex combined cycle gas turbine with exhaust heat recovery systems. Lots of capacity in those cargo ships for a large size/weight engine unlike a "small" military or pleasure ship of similar HP. Plus no boiler tickets need to be carried by the operating staff. Not as dangerous as a steam system with leaks. Quick startup and shut down cycle.

Best wishes.

What? Canada is a huge and powerful country with thousands of miles of coast. It stands to reason that your industries were involved in maritime engineering. You have the entirely wrong idea about my statement. I feel sorry for you.
