I hate to ask off topic questions, but you guys are the most knowlegable people I know. My duaghter just bought a cheap!! 91 cavalier. The right rear brake grabbs and makes a clunking noise. I checked all four wheels and they all had almost new pads and shoes. I have did my own brakes all my life and haven't ever had this happen. The only thing I found wrong was that the rear shoes weren't adjusted enough when installed. I adjusted a couple of turns and no more noise. Today she called and it is clunking again and locks up the right rear wheel. I'm clueless unless the shoes are not the correct ones and not fitting the stop right. Help!

Thank you all

I never saw that problem on anything except GM FWD. And I saw it a lot. Never did really pin down the problem but suspect it a combination of being adjusted too loose and possibly the backing plates worn where the shoes rub. The shoes create "grooves" when not lubed and the they will get have caught until the right situation causes them to ride over the hump. Doing a PROPER brake job has always eliminated it for me, hence my not determining the true cause.

Check for mismatched brake leading and trailing shoes. Someone could have installed both leading shoes on one side and the trailing shoes on the other. Could be a hardware mixup also. I've seen it all from Saturday mechanics.

PF,

Two things: Brakes don't usually make a "clunking" noise, so I would make sure that wheel bearing is as it should be.

How about the brake cylinder leaking fluid? A 'grabbing' brake usually points to being oil soaked. And, make sure the primary shoe is on the front and the secondary is on the back side of the backing plate. Sometimes, they are different lengths.

Also, is she using the emergency brake during her travels? If so, maybe that one cable is hanging up.

A clunking noise in the back usually points to a strut or bad rear ball joint depending on the car body type.

Could the adjuster be hanging up?

Hi Dave,

Oh heck, it's hard telling what he'll find in there.

Usually tho, the adjuster needs 'movement' of the shoe assembly to tighten and usually just freeze up without tightening any further.

But like I say, anything is possible including ground up brake parts laying in the bottom of the drum.

Just had a simular thing happen to our 95 Dodge Mini-Van - the front side piston of the passenger side rear wheel cylinder became stuck. This caused the trailing brake shoe to rotate around causing the leading shoe to grab, causing the brake to lock up. Thank goodness we weren't on the interstate when this started. When it comes to brakes, you need to check the entire system.
