Trying to find info on repairing this injector pump on my Ford 801. It has a drip leak from the rod that goes through pump and hooks to throttle linkage. It leaks on both sides of the pump. (See arrow)
I have talked to two pump rebuilders (by e-mail) and one told me the bushings are probably bad and need replacing. This would mean a total pump rebuild at $500.00. The other told me bushing could be bad but are not 90% of the time. Probably just the o-rings bad and needs resealing.
So if possible I would like to take the cover off to left of leak pull pin out and replace the o-rings myself and see if this works before jumping into a total rebuild that I may not need. The pump works great and engine runs and idles great it just leaks.
The book I have does not show any of the internal pump parts. I would like to know what I will encounter when doing this as I do not want to take cover off and have a million small parts fall out and not know how to reinstall.
I can rebuild a engine from the ground up just have never been in a pump before. Is this something I can do myself or should I just bite the bullet and spend the $500.00? If anyone has a detailed view of pump internal parts that would be a big help also.
Thanks John third party image

Bob,

I'd appreciate a copy. I think I am going to tackle a Roosa Dist type on a '63 4 cyl. 2000 blue. Pump part no is DBGVCC.

It runs ok at lower rpm's but cuts out at high and is getting progressively worse (lower rpms where it runs smoothly). When cutting out there are puffs of black smoke out the stack. Also, when coming down from higher rpm's it doesn't "settle in" like diesels do when rpm's drop to the throttle set point (oh oh oh oh oh pause jing jing jing type sound). Starts fine hot or cold weather.

I checked the email response box so we can communicate. Never did this before so we'll see how it works.

Thanks.

Mark

It's a fairly easy fix. The shafts (both halves) have one o-ring each on them along with a teflon washer. A complete o-ring and seal kit is $29. Both halves pull out sideways. Since your engine block is in the way, the pump will probably have to come off to remove the shafts. They are held together, and in, by a snap ring. Many tractor companies use that style RoosaMaster (Stanadyne) distributor injection pump. Some give detailed repair info, and some do not. I have a Ford factory service manual for my tractor and it does not give detailed information on the pump. John Deere offered such info in separate books based just on the pumps, not the tractors. Allis Chalmers and Oliver gives a comprehensive tutorial on rebuilding the pumps in most of their manuals for each tractor. For instance, my AC HD4 dozer has a 200 c.i. engine with basically the same pump as your's, and it has a detailed section on rebuilding it along with many photographs. If you cannot find someone near you with such a manual, post your e-mail address and I'll send you some scanned images. The pumps are not all that complicated. Generally speaking, it has a set of plungers that do all the high pressure fuel pumping. The fuel charge they create runs through a distributor that determines which cylinder the fuel charge goes too. The pump has an automatic timing advance mechanism that is actuated by fuel pressure. The source of the fuel pressure is from a four vane fuel pump built ihto the back of the injection pump. R.P.M. is governed by a centrifugal weights (six of them). Considering your pump is old enough to be leaking through the shaft seals, it's likely the governor weight retaining ring will be shattered. It's just a piece of plastic and comes with the seal kit. The Roosamaster seal kit is part # 24371. I bought some last week at $29.26 each. Any reputable diesel repair shop should stock them. If you don't know of one, search the Internet or . . . here's the info on the place where I buy my parts. He ships UPS. Ralph's Diesel Service, 3202 Cazenovia, NY, 13035, phone - 315-655-3702
