Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in camshafts between the Series I and Series II KT17 Kohler engines? I have a series II engine needing rebuild (threw a rod, broke the cam in half), and have a used Series I cam. I think the part numbers might be different but I thought the only differences in the engines had to do with the oiling system (or lack of).

Not sure if there is any difference in the cams...the engines sure lok about the same except fot the oiling systm in the series II....

I only use straight 40W Castrol in ours..both seriesI and a replacement seriesII..and in all the other air-cooled engines here in the summer, and have not had a problem since I changed to the 40 wt... I was told that the Series I should always be filled 1/4" Above the full mark....after one threw a rod...!! I would put dual exhausts on it while it is out..gets rid of a lot of heat, and back pressure--sounds good too....
