Just happened on to a display of some old tractors at Montcalm Community College, (central Michigan), put on by the A-Tractive Tractor Club.
Several nice restorations, but there were two tractors that I wasn't familiar with - one was school bus yellow, and bore the legend "The General" on the sides of the hood. It's TWIN was red in color, (couple shades darker than Farmall red,) and bore the MW label, M above the W in a circular logo. Never seen these before. Could someone give me a few details regarding these two neat little tractors?????

Thanks guys, I was not familiar with those tractors! Assumed the MW was a Montgomery Ward, as they marketed a lot of items from various manugacturers under their label, but The General was a complete new one to me - and to have the two identical tractors side by side, really caught my attention!

The "General" was made by Cletrac or the Cleveland Tractor Company of Cleveland, Ohio (their only venture into the rubber tired market) and was made from about '39-'42 or so. It was the rubber tired version of their HG crawler. In about '42 or so, that rubber-tired version was taken over and built by the B F Avery Company of Louisville, Kentucky and was repainted red and called the model A. The MW referred to the Montgomery Ward chain of department stores who called that Avery A the "Wards Twin Row". Eventually, the BF Avery Company was gobbled up by Minneapolis-Moline in the early 50's. I have written a little history page on those tractors and you can find it here in the left-hand margin under the "articles" section.
