I have a 1974 economy tractor with a 14hp kohler motor and 4 speed transmission when I depress the clutch and put it in gear it grinds slightly. If i wait a little time after I depress clutch it is better. Also it has to be at idle. If rpm's are up high it grinds more. Is this normal, I replaced clutch disc that made it much better but did not eliminate it.

Your transmission won't cause that trouble. Sounds like clutch disk drag, or your pilot bushing causing excess friction. When you put the clutch disk in, did you make sure it slides freely on the splines and that the pressure plate fingers are all even? The trans. in that tractor is same as was used in the Crosley cars, I believe.

I would look at the pedal adjustment to see if it is releasing as much as possible. Most clutch pedals need to have 1/2" to 3/4" "free play" before the linkage takes up and starts to release the clutch. You measure it at the pedal. Mostly you can depress the clutch with one or two fingers, then at the end of the free play it will suddenly get harder and begin releaseing the clutchl The less free play you have the more the clutch will release. Another thing to check is the level of oil in the transmission. And possibly it's viscosity. If the oil level is low the gears will spin and spin before stopping. You may still have enoghh oil to lube it but not enough to help slow it down. And if you have recently changed it and put in "tractor lube" or a thinner oil that could do it too. If the clutch seems to be releasing try putting some 90 weight gear oil in the transmission if it doesn't already have it. If you haven't changed it since it was new it could use a change by now. Hope this helps.

Saw your helpful posting, and wondered if you can tell me how you regulate the height of the mower deck on a 1972 Economy with hydraulics. I also can't figure out how to tension the pto properly. A fitting came with the tractor that may have been used to pull the mower behind rather than under. Ever see this? Thanks for any help. Heath
