I'll agree with 49cubber. My PSD doesn't need a chip and I pull 28K GCW at times.

Try pulling by maximum torque RPM or 1600RPM on the 7.3. I averaged 14.1mpg on a recent 3800 mile trip pulling 16K GCW from 2000ft to 11000ft. I had no power problems at all.

Hi Dale,

The only time I've ran 65mph is on my 125 mile test road for mileage checks and that was 18.4mpg? or some where close. I'll have to look at my log book.

I decided on 60mph as the yields me a consistant 19.2mpg, pulling 28k GCW 60 miles, 80% hi-way, on each and every tank. That is as near empty weight I run as I'm always pulling something.

I just did mmy life time fuel mileage for 15000 miles....17.1mpg..... with pulling 6500 miles out of 15k.

That's on a 2k2 F350, CC, DRW, 4wd, PSD, 6spd, 3:73

T_Bone you fellers orta get a Dodge w/Cummins next time. Them fellers claim their Mayflower trucks get 37-39hwy and 26-28city.

Without a re-chip them Dodge/Cummins boys put 1100 lbs torq to the wheels and never rebuild one til they have at least 900,000 miles and that's while running 24/7/365 pulling 50,000 lbs in a 53'X 13.5'tall van trailer against a head wind both ways.

If they aint driving them 80-85mph pulling 50,000 lbs they parkum at home and jack up one wheel for the belt and run a sawmill or hammermill all weekend ever weekend.

Hey Burrhead; what kind of grass do Them Mayflower fellers smoke.I know that Cummins engines are great but I just have to sleep thru this one.I am satisfied enough with my standard, non chipped engine F350 PSD without trying to set new records.I hear that the chips really give a big boost, and maybe the engines are over built and can handle the load. However I am not loaded w/ money and there is usually a payday for everything.I am running a truck not a research and experimental development operation.

The Mayflower boy near me carried his 2002 Mayflower over in Houston and had it hotted up to some ungodly hoss power. I think it was like 350hp.

About 3 weeks after he had it chipped they towed him back 200 miles to Cummins with a busted piston. Cummins said they would fix it alright
but the warranty would not cover it.

We never had these 2000 to 2002 F350 here re-chipped either. If we wanted bigger motors we would have bought bigger Fords.

I drive a 91 F350 7.3 non-turbo as my daily driver. In 350,000+ miles all I have done is 1 set of crank bearings, worked the heads @ about 250,000, and oil changes @ 4000-4500 mile.

It aint never had the injectors or injector pump rebuilt yet. At about 100,000 I did carry the pump in and had steel gears put in it but that's all she's had.

One thing you need to know - if you decide to "chip" the engine you will also need to replace the exhaust system with a more free flowing set up and install an exhaust temp gauge. Adding 70 - 100 hp greatly increases exhaust temps and USING that hp makes it even worse. All that extra heat will shorten the life of your heads - especially the valves. Most of those "chip' set ups are for guys who use their trucks for high end grocery getters.
