At our yard we've got a 1967 Ford 3400 Tractor/Front loader. 4 cyl Diesel. I'm having power steering problems. A line blew going to one of the assist cylinders and I lost all the fluid. I did a little research and was told to use New Holland hydraulic fluid in the P/S. When I run the tractor now, the P/S is easy for the 1st few minutes, then hard as a rock ..... I opened the P/S reservoir and found that the fluid was foamy ... I'm assuming the foamy-ness is what's causing the P/S to get hard ..... Am I supposed to bleed the system? or is it self bleeding when you turn it lock to lock like in a car or truck? If it is self bleeding, I did the repair about a week ago, I would've thought the air would be bled out by now ... Should I be using something else for P/S fluid? Like Ford Type F ATF? What do you guys use?

P.S. 3400 should have a 3 cylinder engine. Look under your R.H. hood panel for the decal with the Unit number and Tractor number on it. Take these with you when you go to a New Holland dealer for parts, it will help the identify the exact varation of 3400 that you have and will give them the final assembly date and country of assenbly.

You are correct in using 134 fluid. Did you change the filter when you put the new oil in? Before March 1968 the resevoir should be above the pump and connected to it by hoses. Foaming can be caused by water in the system, and by getting air in the system. Replace the hoses if they are old and hard, suck as much of the old fluid out that you can, and install a new filter. The system is supposed to self bleed. You may have a restriction in your lines not allowing fliud to return properly, or you may also have a problem in the hydra motor in the steering column. First try the cheap fix of oil & filter.
