what are the differences between the 4850 and 4650, did they come with 18.4 42s or did you have to modify them, how about prices?

I had a 4650 mfwd on my sale it was a 1988 power shift, It had 6743 hrs, and it was a cream puff,It brought 27700.00;;I dont believe you will get 20000 hrs out of these, I think 10000 hrs would be it, and thats with a head gasket along the way;

Those horsepower numbers are factory specs. Most 4650s at stock fuel delivery will make 175-180, and most 4850s will pull 200 or a little more on the average.

4650 = 165 hp to the 190 hp of the 4850. The 4650 was available with Quad-Range or Powershift trannies, while the 4850 is Powershift-only. Same size engine - 6466 with aftercooler. Identical in size and most internal components, but the 4850 has stouter final drives. Same cabs. 42s fit with ease, and I think I've even seen some with 46s on them, but I can't say for sure. I believe the 4850 also has more hitch lift capacity. All other things being equal, a 4850 will probably be worth $3000 or $4000 more than a 4650. There's really no hard and fast rules on value, though. I'm sure there's been 4650s sell for more than comparable 4850s. All depends on the buyer and seller.

And yes, the hoods are the same length for both tractors. There is a serial number break in each series, and all the old part numbers sub up to the new number, which is the same for BOTH tractors. The hood extension is also the same part number on both. The hoods are the same.

If the overhaul is done at 8000 hours or so, it's possible for one to run 20,000 hours. It all depends on how it's used and maintained. Deere changed the head gasket material, hardware and torque sequence, and eliminated a bunch of the head gasket sealing problems. It you crank one clear up and lug the heck out of it, you could still blow the head gasket, but it's much less likely with the new stuff. Of course, that 20,000 hours is excluding the rest of the powertrain, as you're likely going to get into needing some transmission work by the that time, depending once again on how hard it's used. I'm sure there are 46s and 48s out there pushing 20,000 hours, as I've seen 55-series tractors with well over 10,000. It's all in how you take care of them.
