Hi; I am looking for electrical help. I just converted my TO-30 to 12 volt. I trashed the starter, not sure if it was bad when i got it. Is there anything out there to reduce the voltage to the starter to 8 or 10 volts, or anything else i can do to save another $185.00. Thanks Randy

Randy, You won't hurt a 6 V starter by running it at 12 V. You actually have a longer lived starter. With 12 V across it, the starter current is halved which means the resistive heating is reduced signifincantly (by a factor of 4). That's not to say a sorry old worn out 6 V starter will last forever at 12V. All things being equal a six volt starter run at 12 V will out last a 6 V starter run at 6 V. Hope this helps.

P.S. As a fellow TO-30 owner, I would advise you ask this question on the Ferguson forum.

Old is right, the 6 volt starter should be able to take 12 volts with no major problems. Being designed for the lower voltage the insulation, etc is all heavier than it would be in a 12 volt, and that's why it will work 12V to 6V but not the other way. We ran the one on our 440 Deere crawler like this for over 10 years, after we converted it, before the starter finally gave out, and Lord only knows how old it was before we got it. In the end you'd be money ahead to bite the bullet and get a regular 12V starter. I'd try to find a good rebuild shop that can make you up one before I'd spend $185 though. Around here I can get a big, reconditioned Delco starter, outright for that price, so your's shouldn't be nearly that, if you find the right place. Good luck.

I did a 12 volt conversion on a ford 640 in 1980 sold it to a friend , still has the original starter on it to this day. 6 volt starter has a lot heavier windings, turns a lot faster. Therefore tractor should start quicker. I remember coverting a 1953 ford 3/4 ford pickup to overhead valve engine 292 CI in 1971 left the 6 volt starter on it. That winter got down to 20 below here, the only thing in the area that would start was my 1953 ford pickup. Had do a lot of running around for all the neighbors untill weather warmed up a little. Never again got bad word about my old ford truck. In all the years that I had the 1953 ford ,it never failed to start.

my input. 4 what it is worth

Yuor starter was probably bad to start with a 6 volt starter works well on 12 volts unless of course you crank it for like 5 minutes nonstop. 30-45 seconds max and the hold off for a minute and it will be ok. I have 5 tractors with 12 volt and 6 volt starters and non have any problems, some have the same starter and there 20 years on the place
