I was asked to do a tune up on a Continental engine on a Lincoln 200 welder. I can't believe that some people don't look after their equip. The air cleaner input hose was half plugged, the top of the metal filter element was covered with grime just like you would have if you had a small oil leak in very dusty conditions. In the bottom of the oil bath air cleaner bowl there was 3/4 inch of ice and below that 1/4 inch of crud. I had to plug the air intake of the filter and turn it upside down and fill with varsol to soften the crud. Still soaking. May not have to do a carb job, willl see how it runs when totally cleaned up.

Just a follow up. Found no point gap in the distributor. Set gaps, cleaned fuel system and tested. Motor starts well and has good power but may need ring job as it seems to smoke when reving up. I believe the cyclinder walls have been washed down from the over rich mixture. We will see in about 2 weeks.

It's suprising what you see out there sometimes. I've got one customer that does rock drilling and blasting. I can't count the number of times I've gone to work on one of the drills and found the air cleaner element level full of dust. I'm talking a BIG Donaldson cleaner that's like 10" in diameter and 24" long. I even took the time one day to get the operator a hose and blow nozzle so he could blow out the filter at the end of each day. The hose stayed coiled with the factory wrap for over 3 years til another operator got on the machine. I've replaced 3 turbos on one machine, and just did one on another one prematurely. You can tell them and tell them that maintenance pays, but in the end it's the lack of maintenance that pays me...

While this may not be relivant in your case consider this..... .

You gave him a price to do a normal tune up because as you said "I was asked to do a tune up". Now that you have gotten elbow deep in it you come back and add extra charges to cover the extra work and materials and what does he do.... He blows a cork...

What was it Fram use to say.....
Pay me now...Or pay me later...Up to you !!!!! !
