Gas vs Diesel again, the best truck again? Thats easy, they dont build it. It would be a Cummins engine mated to a Allison automatic in a Ford F-350

That's funny. I've been thinking the same thing. My pickup is getting pretty long in the tooth and I would like to get a new one. About every 2 years I take another look at new pickups again. After looking them over I conclude that each has it's problems and my old pickup with 140,000 will be fine for another year or 2. Thankfully, I don't use a pickup much any more. I realized pickup trucks really are not that great of a way of to haul the heavier tractors and if you want to haul a couple forget it. So, four years ago I bought a nice for Kenworth truck for about half the price of the new pickup. Best move I ever made. So much safer and better ride than a pickup. I will never haul tractors with a pickup now that I am spoiled.

how does Chevy designate their trucks? Im guessing from what I read 1500=1/2 ton, 2500= 3/4 t. & 3500 = 1 t.?

Go to your local Chevy dealer see if you can get a look at the stack of service bulletins on the diesel verses the ones on the gas. Then see how confident you are in the ability of GM to build a diesel.

I've got a 01 duramax 3500 dually extended cab,
4x4 I haul tractors on,pulling a 30 ft 8000 pound trailer.It has 38K miles runs great,gets
around 14 mpg with the empty trailer.I've had
a couple powerstrokes and two dodges with the
cummins, this truck out pulls them both, but doesn't get any better milage than the others.
A friend has the new 6 cylinder powerstroke, but
has had a lot of problems, the cummins is a good
engine, but the Dodge truck has several problems to.

The new powerstroke is a 6 liter, not a 6 cylinder, and rumor here in NY is that it will outpull and outmileage both GM and Dodge- but suffers terribly from new model mechanicals. (there ain't been enough built to sort out all the problems.) All the latest diesel pickups are good reliable powerplants making excellent torque (which does the work- not the HP) with respectable mileage. My response is this- How much power do you guys really need? If you really want to pull something, go get a used FL 70 or small S series. These are real trucks, can be had under CDL, pull strongly, and are obtainable used under 20,000 dollars where a new pickup is 40,000 dollars plus. You all say these newer diesels need more power- go back to the days of the aspirated 6.9L in the Ford- lots of torque but no HP. Lots of mileage but no HP. If you are looking for max torque and max HP AND 20 miles per gallon, it ain't gonna happen in a showroom stock unit. It takes fuel to get 'er done.

mike...
better check your fact giver... he does NOT deserve a Bud. the 6.0 Ford (Navistar) Turbo Diesel motor IS A V8 not a V6. Ford is looking for a V6 to put into a F150, but nothing has been announced yet. The only advantage the old Ford Diesel had over the Dodge was cubic inches, now that they are trying to get I6 torque out of a small (6.0 liter)V-8 I think they will have longevity issues if motors are worked hard. remember the 300 I-6 ford gas motor, slow but would pull like the dickens and last doing it. The I-6 design is excellent for working, the v-8 is excellent for racing. Wonder what most people do with their trucks?

Duane.

Look around, most people are buying 3/4 ton diesels and using them as status symbol grocery getters. They are todays' oversized Cadillacs and Lincolns of the 70s. The most they might pull is a recreational trailer of some kind or another. They want cruising speed - not towing grunt.

I have an 03 2500hd duramax with 23,000 on it and I get 18 mpg doin 80 empty to work. It will leave a 7.3 ford in the dirt it is the hardest running thing I have owned. My buddy has a new ford but can't keep it out of the shop long enough to find out which one is faster. All the people I work with are real upset I drive a chevy. I guess it's cause I work at ford and build their trucks. In my opinion the 454 won't hold a candle to the duramax.

I've been saying for years that Ford has the chassis, and Dodge has the engine! If someone ever makes a "DORD" or a "FODGE" I would definitely buy one.

I don't know much about the Duramax, I haven't heard anything good OR bad about it.

I do know that the Ford 7.3 "POWER JOKE" is the best boat anchor International has ever built!
