Rick: It is an 8 speed, put no live PTO. Only one hole for the clutch rod. This tractor has been this way since I got it 4 yrs ago. Sounds like the tractor will have to be split to find out just what is wrong. Just what do you mean by feathering the clutch? Thanks for your reply. Dick

Feathering would be engaging the clutch just enough to allow the splined coupler to line up with the splines on the drive shaft. With transmission PTO, when the clutch is disengaged, nothing aft of the pressure plate is turning. Therefore, if you could shift the trans without grinding, the PTo should shift, too. There would be no grinding when the PTO lever is shifted. That is why I think you have a non-functional 2 stage clutch in there; perhaps with the wrong rod from the pedal to the cross-shaft. Especially after verifying it is an 8 speed (not that all 8 speeds had live PTO).

If you are depending on the two hole fitting on the end of the clutch rod to identify a two stage clutch be careful. Ford switched to a single hole - not possible to lower pedal - style fitting in late production and for all replacement parts. My point is you could still have a live PTO that only needs adjustment. The "Ford Shop Manual" has a good two page description of how to adjust and trouble shoot. Just trying to help.

Thanks. I will have to try the feathering. With the temps now at zero it may be a few days before I get to it but thanks for the help. Question. With the trans in neutral, clutch engaged and the pto engaged should I be able to turn the pto at the rear of the tractor. It wont turn. Dick

Dick,

I have a 1974 Ford 2000 gas tractor. With the transmission in neutal, the PTO engaged, and with the clutch engaged, that is, without pressing down on the clutch pedal, the PTO shaft should be spinning. That is what live PTO is all about. I don't know about other years of the Ford 2000, but mine definitely has live PTO.

By the way, the PTO shaft is easily removed from the back of my tractor. If yours is also, you might remove the shaft and see if the drive mechanism inside the transmission is operating properly.

Good luck,

Tom
