I am looking to purchase a new or used sub-compact tractor - 18hp to 25hp, with rear/mid PTOs and that can take a loader and tiller. My need is for light landscaping, tilling, mowing, and snow removable.

I'm looking at Kubota's BX line, JD's 4010, and 10 Series Yanmars.

What is the better product, given price, durability, and use ability?

If anyone has a used one they're thinking of selling and are in the New England area, please let me know.

Thanks!

Find you a good used low hour John Deere 650,750,or 850 (made by Yanmar)they are tough and extremely reliabele, and are also available in Hydrostatic drives also. 7xx series and up have live pto, which is the only thing I dislike on my 1981 model 650 with 1240 hrs on it. They are very ecenomical to operate, mine must get 100 miles to the gallon of fuel. However John Deere does love them because of their parts prices! Of course the Color green is expensive any way! I belive if you do some research you will find the John Deere compacts
are made by Yanmar.
This was true in the early production 70s-80s.
Not sure if they still are made by them.

I bought a Kubota B275(21HP) in 2000 after looking at it and the JD's. It was about $1500 cheaper and came with mid PTO standard. It has performed flawlessly ever since. Be sure to get the hydrostat drive and 4x4. The hydro will work circles around a stick shift and the 4x4 turns it from a lawn mower into a real tractor and will amaze you at what it can do.
I did not like the Yanmars offered since all were gray market tractors and hydrostat were not available. The tires on them were ag type with tread about 4" deep. You can inagine what that would do to a yard after a little shower. Also, no ROPS protection on gray market tractors. That may not sound like a big deal but I lost a good friend in a flipover with no ROPS. It matters to me now...

They are the same thing, and that's why there isn't any Yanmar dealers around, deere forced them to stop selling tractors under Yanmar colors.

I wouldn't pay more for a deere, as the Kubota is every bit as good.

Buy the one you like!!

If it is used you want, get a Ford from the "20" series before they became Mazda. I have a 1520 which is a great little tractor. Goes where my big International can't. Has loader, etc. They had a 1720, 1920, and 2120 also if you need more HP. Can't beat them. Mine is 15 this year with never a trip for service and it works hard.

Some things to keep in mind when purchasing a compact. How much PTO horsepower do you want to manage the implements you want to use? Go and look at all of the models, sit on them, drive them, and whatever else the dealer will let you do. You will find that the New Holland has the best visibility, which is very important when using a loader. Access for the hydraulic's is very important, as to where the main valves are located. Most of the tractors have them hidden under the seat or the platform and are not accessible to work with yourself. Make sure the tractor is equipped with all of the hydraulic outlets you can get. Make sure that your power steering pump is seperate from the other hydraulics on the tractor. John Deere always quoted that they have more hydraulic power but when it come down to it their power steering is feed by the whole hydraulic system so when the system pulls down you loose power steering. If you are purchasing it for landscaping, make sure it has either turf or industrial tires, not bar tires. The bar tires tear up lawns to much. Make sure the loader has a joy stick for the hydraulic movement so you can feather your movements. Also make sure you get a tractor with hydrostatic transmission, in the New Holland model it should come with a rear and mid mount PTO.
Ask about specials, every month the various dealers have something different to offer you to compete against the other dealers.

Bought a Kubota L245DT in 1982, have worked it pretty hard about half of the following years, and the only thing we ever did to it was replace the radiator and the battery. We have also had JD products that have given us excellent service as well. We have never had a Yanmar, mainly because there are no Yanmar dealers araound.

I think the most important feature of any of these tractors is the dealer. Even if you are buying a used tractor, buy one that there is a reputable dealer in your area. It makes all the difference.

I have a John Deere 4310 4x4 ehydro with a Long 4 in 1 bucket on a 430 loader and I love it. I moved a lot of 12' long sections of 12"+ diameter green pine after Hurricane Isabell with ease. Most of the contractors around here use the compact JD's, so that is a good endorsement for them. I looked a Kubota, but the fit and finish on the JD is far superior. I also like the hydro pedal placement much better than Kubota's. Either one would probably be an excellent tractor, but I just like JD better and I am willing to pay a little more to get it. Around here Yanmar dealers are non-exsitant. Kubota , John Deere , Ford new - holland all good I looked at all three a few years back and with a hydro JD was the only one that you could hold the brakes on a hill and run the hydro pedal with the other foot. May not be a big deal if you don't have hills. Buy a 4x4 if you have hills or not cause these are light machines and it really helps.

You also may want to look at Warranty, I know that New Holland was offering a 3year warranty with every new "Boomer" tractor sold. I priced out a 24HP TC24 with rear blade, with tax-delivery-R4 tires it was $11,600--not bad. I talked myself out of it though. My opinion is that JD makes a great machine--that size has the Yanmar diesel in it I believe. The New Holland has the Shibura Diesel, wrong spelling Im sure. Good luck.
