The Holstein infected with mad cow disease in Washington state was imported into the United States from Canada about two years ago, federal investigators tentatively concluded Saturday. Dr. Ron DeHaven, chief veterinarian for the Agriculture Department, said Canadian officials have provided records that indicate the animal was one of a herd of 74 cattle that were shipped from Alberta, Canada, into this country in 2001 at Eastport, Idaho

Who cares where the animal came from. Maybe the politicians should do a study on petroleum byproducts used as food additives and it's effect on the number of cancer cases a year. Cancer was not a big issue 60 years ago when you ate good beef and smoked like a chimney. Its a real good political and media show showing a cow stumbling around. Easy to pick on farmers, not so easy to pick on the huge chemical companies that have more resources than the government themselves. Politicians are like a gaggle of old women, they need a good gossip fiasco to make them feel important. It doesn't matter if the gossip is about a soap opera or something real, as long as they can flap their lips and feel important.

FROM ENGLAND.NO IT HAS NEVER BEEN PROVEN THAT B.S.E. CAUSES C.J.D. IN HUMANS,BUT IT WAS TRANSFERED TO MICE BY INJECTING THE DISEASE DIRECTLY IN-TO THE BRAIN-SO WHAT EVER YOU DO DONT'T STICK A STEAK IN YOUR EAR! JOKING ASIDE THE BOFFINS ARE NOWHERE NEARER FINDING THE CAUSE E.T.C NOW THAN THEY WERE 15 YEARS AGO WHEN IT BECAME KNOWN IN ENGLAND.WE HAD A MEDIA TRIAL,ALL BEEF EXPORTS WERE BANNED AND OUR BEEF INDUSTRY WAS VIRTUALY WIPED OUT OVER NIGHT,PREY TO GOD IT DOESN'T HAPPEN TO YOU-IT HURTS -REALLY BAD,AND NO,THE PRICE WON'T DROP IN THE SHOPS,BUT EXPECT 50-75% FARM PRICE DROP,MARKET CLOSURES ETC-TOLD YOU IT WOULD HURT-MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU.

mebbe I'm kinda dumb but have they ever proven that BSE causes CJD? Are the two related? I doubt it. But then cattle have lice. Do humans get cattle lice? It is all bullsh*t and propaganda and I doubt the American consumer will buy it. Then on the other hand; how many people will die on US highways this weekend alone? Are we going to ban the automobile?

Well this is course a serious problem and no one person or country is to blame. It now appears that we all know something we didn't a few years ago and thats in regards to the feed we are giving our food supply. There is something to that old saying "you are what you eat". I just hope they have gotten to the actual cause. One thing I do think though and even though it may cost me money, downed cattle should never be near a packing house. That would include broken legs since that's what some french farms did to get cattle with MCD to slaughter.
There should be no finger pointing to the north or south, since "lucky" for all of us so much trade goes on between us, some cattle have more travel miles than I do..... .....

Well the way I read it on Yahoo and others in three days the US has lost 90% of it's exports because of this. This means that at the sales the prices for cattle will drop alot! The thing is tht that 90% we lost is of the 10% that we export meaning we have lost the sales of 9% of the total beef produced. Bet the sale prices drop more than 9% don't you? Hopefully we can get this stopped and in control quickly before really drastic measures have to be taken.

As for which country it came in from, what does it really matter? It is here and we need to deal with it fast!

Yup!! APATHY, STUPIDITY, "Or too scared to speak up when something wrong is pressed upon us as the truth. We are over taxed, over governed, over regulated, dis-armed, have slow/abused/overloaded nation health care , environmental boondogals, grants to corrupt gov'ts around the world plus peace and love agendas."

To much GOV'T!! Lots of folks think FREEDOM is being able to go get a vanilla shake from MacDs.

IMHO, this is just another lever like NAFTA, FTAA et. al to turn USA into 3rd world country. I will sign off before I get "off on a rant" this just ain't the place for my VENTING.

Consider this. . . (see link)

canada never boycotted your beef you can ship into canada still i think they only have the same regulations on now as your government has placed on ours, at first your government closed the border to every thing it has just been in the past few weeks that they relaxed it a bit to what we now have and you now have the same rules.did you know that the fellow who had mad cow here moved here in 2001 bought a farm then bought part of a herd (30 ) that was imported from the states, in May he was found to have mad cow in his herd, poor guy took the hit just like all the rest, didn,t matter that he was an american he lost everything just like most others here an i don,t know of anybody who blamed him.thousands of cattle crossed the border both way s up until then, when you have that kind of traffic your bound to have some problems, but is the rest of the world any safer than our supply , i don,t think so , but they,ll sure jump at the chance to stick it to us and especially to you folks , since they like to blame you for eveything that happenes in the world, i hope you all fare better than we did,and if sayin this cow came from here helps any of you out ,go for it ,nobodys buyin ours anyways.

I have a notion that this disease has been around for quite a while, but better checking is finding it. Most sick cows never get to market, hence never checked. The parts that matter don't get into the human food - at least they're not supposed to. Too much is not known about this problem. I figger you've got a lot better chance of being struck by lightning than by getting anything from eating beef.

I would think if this cow came from canada it is better than if it out of a usa herd, but where are the rest of these cows? I wish someone had some good news. Went out for supper last eve and didnt see people ordering much chicken or fish, The event doesnt seem to scare anyone here in central Ne.

Certenly not the producer or the consumer. I don't see the prices going down in the store, just at the sale barns. I'm gonna keep eating beef, got to die from something.

Media really blowing this out of proportion.Questions I have is: If you get it from eating brains and spinal column,It doesn't make sense. When you slaughter you cut the head off, then gut, then they saw right down the back in the quartering process. Are they not cutting the spine in two? Never seen my butcher "REMOVE" the spine tissue. And if it takes years to contract.....why all the sudden did all the Englanders get sick when they got it over there?Just my Two cents worth.

According to the reports, the people contracted it years before they began showing symptoms and the animals contracted it years before THEY first showed symptoms.

The people contracted what?? Stupidity? There is no evidence of a human getting a disease from a "madcow".

Gotta jump in here. There's no "definitive" proof of a causal link between BSE (Mad Cow) and CJD (human variant), but then again, it's only "strongly believed" that cigarettes cause cancer...

Think what you want, (and I still eat beef) but BSE is an issue, and yes, maybe it's only recently been recognized, but around forever. However, as it takes years to actually get "sick" you can't take any chances. Once you get it, you got it...
