I was reading the article about the Silver King's top speed being 25 mph. What are some top speeds of other tractors? I understand the CO-OP had a high top end. Also, the UDLX? Just curious and thought others might share what they know.

I believe that it's the one your sitting on when you get caught in a thunderstorm and you and the tractor are the tallest things for miles around!

I have a VAC Case that would go 36 mph when I got it, but wouldn't pull even (1) 14" plow. Found another tractor with bigger bull gears and made the swap. Now I pull two 14" plows but only go about 16 mph.

Years ago a farmer south of Fremont was supposed to have a Simpson (I think ?)that would go 50-60 mph without any modifications. Never saw it though. Has anyone checked the Nebraska Tests to see what was the fastest tractor ever tested?

Not the fastest, but something I'll never forget. Was riding on the hay wagon (80 square bales of alfalfa) being pulled by my Uncle Alvin and his 1949 JD "A". Farmer down the road came up behind us with a MM and tried to pass us. I think it was a U or UB that runs about 20 mph. Uncle Alvin reached down under the right side of the hood and pulled the governor wide open. Never heard a 2 cyl. run that fast, but left the MM in the dust behind us.

My neighbor said that back in the early 70's his dad missed three payments on their new JD 4320 and that tractor "went from the machine shed to the bank parking lot in a heart-beat!"... a distance of 5.6 miles... do the math. 8^)

When I was a kid we had a 430 case 4 speed that was awful fast,so fast it would only run in 4 th going downhill. Now I have an H farmall and a 560,both are pretty nice on the road. I also have a 2n ford that is so slow it takes forever to get anywhere,I usually try to haul it if going over a mile or so.

I would say the Silver King would win the race. I have a 1948 Silver King Model 42 (single front wheel) And I chicken out at 35mph, It will run faster. I also have a 1960 Case 530 diesel, triple range that will top out around 30 mph

Don't know if this is a good place to bring this up but when I was a kid the neighbors had Case tractors Like probibly a 530, seemed like it was awful fast on the road. At that time our fastest tractor was the Allis WD and I have one myself now. I drive a mile up the highway to feed cows and it seems painfully slow.

I second that on the case 530. My father in law has one and in the second to last gear is ok and not to fast. But you have to have it tached out in that gear and then once you slide it into high gear it will allmost stall out and I have never had a straight streach to wind it out. Kinda scared to.

That is why they quit making the Triple range.... Way too fast of a road gear... makes it nice though between fields.. Wind her out some day, with a WFE it is fun!!

For a standard tractor I don't know which would be fastest but it was most likely an orchard model. Nowadays at the pulling contests, they've got some that seem to get up to 50 mph inside of 300 ft. 8-0

if you mean an unmodified production tractor, I guess it would be the JCB Fastrac ( 40 m.p.h.)

In August of 1925, a specially modified version of the Essex Tri-Directional Plowmaster was clocked on the Bonnyville Salt Flats at an even 100 mph. Problem was that they forgot to put brakes in that particular model and it was never seen again. Some think it might even have made it all the way to (and into) the Pacific. The test pilot was none other than the infamous Pinapple Jim Henry who we need say no more about since his exploits are so well known.

Correct again, Rufus. The Dortmunder-Nixon 56/76 Amphib-O-Speed, while not as fast as the ETD on land (what could be?) was very fast over/in the water and proved to be the tractor of choice for farm to market transport among the rice growers of the northern plains.

Yup, I remember them well. We used to call them "frogs" because of their preference to an amphibious habitat. They were even happy in a leaking barn, couldn't ask for much more than that. Have you seen old Gimp Leg around those parts lately?

But wasn't the "ETD's" Greatest velosity attained in it's vertical gear, approximately 1764 kph?

That is not as easy a figure to come up with as it might seem due to the ETD's vertical speed being controlled by the growth rates of the crops. In nice weather the speeds you quoted could be exceeded if some of the "Tall Corn" varieties were planted....As they seem to be here!!

Fast tractor from Michigan- possible 'Love' or 'Friday'- orchard/utility/standard type, designed/built with extra high speed gears for hauling fruit wagons on roads to processing plants during harvest time. RN

Silverkings will do much more than that if you have the right one.I remember the story a fellow told me that during WW2 when the speed limit was 45 he constantly passed cars on the road.

My father and I have a 1938 Case "CC" that came out of the factory with a high speed rear end. It was originally used to pull a milk wagon for the city of Middletown, Ohio. When everything is tuned right, and you are on flat ground with about 3/4 throttle, you can do about 40 MPH. It's an interesting ride for a tractor of that age.
