I just came across and old childs gas powered tractor and need to find out more about it. There are no decals or labels on it due to the fact it is severely rusted, the engine is siezed up and it is missing many parts. From the way it is built it appears to be a factory made item and not a home built project. The chassis measures 33"L X 5"W X 7 1/2"T at the rear and dwindles down to 3" in the front above the front steer wheels. Chassis is bent and spot welded at its seams. The steering fork is of flat steel stock that has been bent in a U shape ((looks flat just like a horse shoe)) then twisted 90 degrees to allow the front axle to pass thru it.It has a stamped steel steering wheel and seat. The engine and the rear axle shaft housings ((axle housings are cast aluminum and bolted to the chassis)) are painted blue.

Its hard to describe any other features of the tractor due to the lack of paint and the numerous parts that are missing

Tracy, the Tecumseh model number cross references to a Craftsman number H22R-3225P. I believe your tractor to be a David Bradley Play Trac. Go to davidbradley.net and click on DB Equipment. Scroll down to Sears Post War Equipment and click on Toys, there is a picture there. You said that your 3 1/2 year old son fits perfectly, that tells me that it's no bigger that a childs pedal tractor. The play trac is the only thing that I can think of that small with a gas motor on it. There should be a tag on it that says David Bradley, but I don't know where it would be located. I hope that my ramblings will be of help, Todd.

Todd, Thank you also. I didnt even see your post reguarding this till today. I didnt get an email about you reply. And thanks to everyone else who helped.

Now I have to rebuild this tractor but there isnt much left to rebuild of it. Im going to have to shear and bend all new sheet metal. Its missing one rear axle shaft housing and both rear wheels themselves. Im just going to have to use the one I have as a template to make a new one. Can anyone find anymore pictures of it other than the one on davidbradley.net ? I cant seem to find any as of yet.

I just fixed up the Play Trac that was bought for my brother in law in 1962. My kids played with it in the early 70"s.
If you want pictures of it send me a EMail.
Joe.

Tracy a few pedal tractors came with gas power, the most famos is a Tracked D4 Caterpilar sales model. I cant recall the others but the front wheel tricycle set up make me think its a Bantam tractor that was used for small gardening. They are also very little. Either way it should be a sought after item.

~Bantam tractor that was used for small gardening~

What type of small gardening? This tractor isnt something and adult could ride. I sat my 3 1/2 year old son on it and he fits it perfectly

~The front wheel tricycle set up make me think its a Bantam tractor~ It has forks like a tricylce or bicycle but, has two front wheels. One on the outside of each fork sharing a common axle shaft

I'd like to see a picture of it also. Ther use to be a company in Baltimore that built small tractors that could look like a toy. The company was named Panzer. A friend of mine has one. I'll get a picture of it and see if it looks something like what you've got.

I understand the description but this is a first for me. In my limited experience I never heard of a child's motorized tractor. Could you provide a pic as this would be interesting to see.

Its a first for me as well. Ive seen several Home built childs tractors but this one I just got appears to be a factory built tractor. I originally thought it may have been produced by the Pony Tractor Co. But I cant find any info about it. My digi cam is broke but, I'll get a pic ASAP and either email it or post it

Are there any ID tags on the engine itself? That may help shed some light on its origin. Please be sure to post those pics, as I'd like to see this too

The only marking on the engine I could find was on the flywheel. "Tecumseh" cast in cursive hand writing. Then I found an aluminum tag screwed to the engine that reads as follows: MODEL
143.521091
21M14

Also the word "DIECAST is casted into it and the following numbers that I assume are casting numbers or a year of manufacture: 19-0-54 (1954?)

Then is it possable that the numbers cast into the engine is actually the year it was manufactured? 19-0-54

Thank you kline!!! This is what I found at>Link

David Bradley Play-Trac 785.21300

The Play-Trac was made by the same people that made the Sears Roto-spaders (Magna-America Corp or their predessors). It was styled to look like the Sears/DB Suburban 725 riding tractor that was the top-of-the-line at that time. Colors were 'Nocturne' (dark) blue body, 'Artic' white wheels and grill. It was offered for only two years, 1962 and 1963. In the 1962 Spring and Summer catalog the engine was listed as a 2 HP Briggs and Stratton. In the 1962 Fall and Winter (as well as in 1963) catalog the engine was listed as a 2 1/4 HP Craftsman (Lauson/Techumseh) The speed was governed at approximately 3 MPH. It used a simple foot pedal clutch (brake?) no reverse. There was no throttle control. The seat had four height positions and four positions forward and back. The original cost was about $100. Although it had a rear hitch and could pull a wagon, there were no specially designed implements for this tractor. It was sold as a toy. Presumably if a Briggs version exists it would be the rarest of these rare tractors.

The Play-Trac name plate. Notice the name printed in a script font. It was attached at the rear of the tractor above the hitch.
