Anybody know of a site dedicated to homemade tractors? I want to build one to put a loader and backhoe on and would like to see some others that have been finished first.

Chris You may want to leave the suspension off the tractor. When digging even wit hthe loader springs wouldnt last long or cause stability isues. I have a cousin that made a tractor loader and backhoe from a Datsun motor and transmission, and a Moline tractor rear end and transmission hooked in tandem. I posted some of the pics on tractorbynet.com in the buildit yourself forums. I also posted a another friends home built 4x4x4 loader. Jimmys backhoe works well and is about the size of the midsize machine Kubota makes now.

Their is a "doodlebug" club here in NH. I can put you in contact with a guy if you'd like. Not sure if that's what you're really looking for.

I searched and found doodlebug tractors club. I am looking for a larger variety. I want to build a powershift (auto trans from pickup) tractor in the 200 hp range. I want to use a 460 engine c6 auto and a real big clark 5 speed in front of a rockwell big truck axle with gear reduction 2 speed ,not the planetary type. I want to keep all the 2 ton's suspension to carry the loader and hoe.I have the loader and the hoe already. I already have most of it drawn out on paper, but I would like someone elses ideas,or I'd like to see someones mistakes before I begin the project.

How will you avoid the mistakes that you will make? Building a durable loader/bachhoe from a
two ton truck is quite a stretch from building
a 'field pulling' budget homemade tractor. Why
not repower the loader/backhoe you are pulling
those parts from? With no R & D budget, like the
engineers at Deere/Cat/Case have, how will you
test you ideas? Even these major companies had
flaws in their machines. Fixing one of their
'down' models would seem more practical. You may
regret this industrial task. Pass...

Man, I am glad I don`t think like you. If I was that afraid of making a mistake I would never have built the two forklifts I use every day. I probably would never have bought used diesel engines from trucks and built stationary power units. Since I had no way to test my ideas except to try them, I would never have done anything. What if I had made a mistake? The world would probably have blown up. Come to think of it, I DID make mistakes. Did the world come to an end?
I, too, have a backhoe that I intend to build some kind of mobile unit for. I have some tractor parts and some truck parts, and I am going to find some way to put them together so they will support the backhoe and provide a way to power it. I will make mistakes. When they show up I`ll correct them and I will do it with NO R and D budget.

I second that emotion. I have modified and built some of the darndest things. I made some mistakes along the way, but now I know what can go wrong. That is my R & D budget. I now use on a recurring basis a tractor, wood splitter and a road grader all either modified or built by me. The best part of it is when the nay-sayers have to eat crow.
