On a J.D. 60 that had not been run in sevaral years with the drain plug left out, the threads had rusted and lost their dept ( new plug will not tighten ). What do you fellows recomend, some of you told me how to fix the throttle lever last week. This is the best place anywhere to get new ideas. Would J.B. weld hold a 3/4 X 1/2 inch pipe bushing in place and then use 1/2 plug in it ? Any help appreciated.

Never tried it, and don't know how it would hold up to the heat, but you may even try one of those rubber expandable boat plugs, at least for a quick fix. If and when you decide to pull the head, you then could fix with a more permanant solution. Just a thought.

DRL Your tip on leather throttle washers worked fine, its a crazy situation as John Deere no longer has the washers by themselves but you can get them by taking the metal plate in a kit that you really don't need for $40.25 + tax .Thanks to you and the others who helped me.

As JMS suggested below (about holding something up against the block), could you possibly make your "adapter" and hold it against the block and then brazing it? This may just be a silly idea--I'm not familiar with a 60 (I have an A), but if you could do something like holding your adapter in place, then brazing, it would save you the trouble of pulling the block.
Good luck!

there may be oversize plugs available try an auto parts store they used to sell oil pan plugs that were self tapping for stripped out oil pan drain plugs you could also tap it and put a bolt in.r

Rod I appreciate your reply, I am sorry I failed to make it clear that it was the water drain plug and not the oil plug. This a 3/4 inch plug under the engine in cast iron which makes it harder to fix than if it was steel. Cast is tough to weld and keep from cracking. thanks again

I would drill it out for a one inch pipe plug. It sounds like it is an overhead drilling job, which can be difficult. Might want to try this- I did it last year on a 1937 AC WC hitch mounting- set a hydraulic jack under your drill, plumb it, and slowly pump up the jack while drilling. You can use the same technique while tapping, to keep the tap plumb.
