Can anyone tell me how to prevent my fluorescent lights from causing interference on my AM radio. They do not bother the FM reception.

Thanks

Scott

Sometimes changing to another plug for radio helps, if lights are on same circuit radio is plugged in. Radio Shack used to have some items to filter /supress interference.

Any energy on the frequency that an AM radio is tuned to will cause interference. This is because AM is amplitude modulation, meaning a strong signal sounds louder than a weak signal (amplitude). This includes all signals, good and bad. Florescents are energized by changes in amplitude of the voltage driving them. Thus, they seem very similar to AM signals and cause interference.

On an FM radio, volume in a radio is determined by how the frequency changes, not how the signal strength changes. This helps FM to be better in fidelity, but worse in range of reception. (Modulation is not the only factor in reception distance.) It also makes many common interference signals to be no issue. Thus, FM is typically quieter than AM, because there are many more interference mechanisms for AM than for FM.

Your cell phone is sending an RF response back to the tower that called it. The RF generates a small voltage on your radios speaker. Move the phone a little further away and this will not happen. This buzzing on speakers will occur anytime you cell phone is actively transmitting too close to the speaker in question.

Turn them off. Sorry, try an external antenna.

I have the same problem with my overheard fans. They cause a lot of static in the AM radio. Hard to listen to RUSH LIMBAUGH with the fans on.
