I'm trying to remove a broken ( components missing )Heisler overdrive from a 1951 M and relpace it with an original brake assy. and cover. I have removed all components down to the plate which bolts on the transfer case. Does anyone know if the this entire shaft for the left brake assy. was swapped out and replaced with one for the overdrive kit? I'm stuck at this point and do not want to continue if it involves pulling the top plate for the transfer case. I cannot remove the bearing/shaft support plate from the case. Any suggestions or help in this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!
Carl

I'm confused... Are you working on an overdrive (9-speed) unit, or the "almost-live-pto" that mounted on the left brake assembly?

I wish I knew more about it to tell you. But what I do know ( or can at least tell you ) is that it's a conversion that replaces the stock brake assy. on the left side. I was told that it was "for a road gear overdrive", and probably changed the top end speed for each gear. Maybe it's an almost live pto, I don't know. It has a heavy aluminum housing which had no exposed running gear or pto. Several pieces are missing and a large portion of the housing has been cut away with a torch. I can get pictures posted in a hurry to eliminate any further confusion.

Sounds to me as if you have a unit that provides "live pto" by interrupting the connection between the left differential shaft and the final drive of the tractor. These mounted on the left side where the left brake is, and had a hand lever extending up close to the left headlight. It was simply a clutch that stopped power to the left rear wheel, but allowed the differential and other internal parts to continue turning. This provided a "live" pto, but you couldn't shift transmission gears while doing this.

I've never taken one of those apart, but I'm of the opinion that you'll have to make the left side of the tractor look like a mirror-image of the right side of the tractor in order to get rid of it!

Thanks for the help. I'm on the bottom end of the "learning curve" as far as tractor stuff goes. I'd ideally like to remove this pto unit and replace it with the stock assembly. I'm not sure if this can be done without taking the top plate of the transfer case off or not ?? I have tried to pull the shaft support plate and seal from the left side so I can swap out the shaft, but it won't disengage from inside. I have all the parts to return it to a stock condition.

If it involves pulling the top plate, I'd like to find someone who would have a complete Heisler live pto cover so I can cover it up again.

Thanks ! Carl
