Is there any problem other than noise of running a staight pipe on a gasoline tractor such as a Farmall 460? We run them on all our diesel tractors but didnt know if gas was differnt as far as needing the backpressure.

Is there a problem with running it with a muffler so you don't have to worry ? Think about that if you catch a hayfield on fire with a straight thru pipe .Use the knowledge God gave you on that decision .

I would recommend that you keep a muffler on that one. Not that a straightpipe hurts the engine, but those IH gas six-cylinders will really ring your ears.

Won't hurt a thing other than your ears.

I run with straight pipes but I still remember the time when I split the manifold on my 1954 chevrolet 6 cylinder and need a valve job within several weeks.

Jerry,

Bingo!!!

I was wondering if anyone was going to bring this up.

A valve will warp whether it is from burning diesel or from gasoline.

I would caution anyone who is running straight pipes and pulling hard, to definitely let the thing idle for a minute or two to cool the valves before shutting down.

Everything is fine as long as the engine is running, but after shutdown, if the outside air temp/wind is just right, that cold air coming back up that pipe and hitting that near 2000-degree valve can cause a stem to ‘pull’ if it is hanging open.

It is a good idea to let ‘em idle a few minutes prior to shutdown, even with a muffler installed.

Just a thought,

Allan

Guess I had forgotten that could happen, but it would happen only if the engine was working hard and you immediately shut it off. Not a good idea for any engine, with, or without, a muffler.
