I am in the process of buying some land & will need a bigger tractor than what I have (super m). It will be about 200 acres in cultivation. I cant afford a "new" tractor but want something more modern than what I have. Im thinking I will need something near 100 hp range & am considering a JD 4020 Diesel or an IH 1066. Does anyone have any suggestions?

the 1066 is a quite a bit more tractor than the jd,personally i would go with a 86 series they are not alot more money and they have a cab with ac.pretty much the same as a 1066 depending on what year you locate.i would suggest a 966 or a 986,they are a little closer to the hp your looking for at 100 hp.

What I am about to suggest will depend entirely upon where you live, and whether you have an off farm job or not. Well, I'm not suggesting it, just questioning if it MIGHT work for you or not.

Can you do some crop rotation planning so that only 70 or so acres need worked at any one time? Such as winter wheat, corn, and soybeans. Will you have some stock so that a part of the acreage will be in a feed crop?

If the aforementioned might work for you, you may be able to get by with the Super M by just spending more time in the field.

Would you consider no-til or minimum-til, and do the majority of your work with a sprayer and chemicals? You would have to spend more hours planting since you probably couldn't handle a big planter, but you would have little tillage, if any, at all.

Just giving you something to think about. It may not work for your scenario or area at all.

Well, I love my super M & plan on keeping it but Ive had some back problems & that tricyle just beats me to death. I wanted to get something a little newer & bigger so maybe I wouldnt have to spend as much time on the tractor & maybe get a little less bounce. Thanks

Then that is certainly a good enough reason to look for another tractor. Glad to hear that you are keeping the Super M. I credit them as being good old work horses even though we had a different brand.

I have a 4020 JD Diesel syncro. and it is a great tractor. It is good on fuel, and very comfortable to operate. It comes with my high recomendation.

I have a JD 4020 Diesel for sale, e-mail me if interested. I'd go with the JD. The IH's can be harder ot get parts for in some parts of the country. The IH's engine's are pretty good, but I don't think that their brakes/hydraulics and Torque Amplifiers are that good. If you would go with an IH, I'd go with the 86 series, a few more updated things.

Hope this helps!

John
