Do you pay attention to tractors for sale on Photo Ads? They are nearly always overpriced! I can't imagine how people will pay the prices asked. But then, maybe no one is buying!

I don't mind the high asking price since I just skip over those. The ones that irratate me are the ones where the asking price is not listed. I skip over those too. I figure if they don't put the asking price they are asking too much. At least when they put the asking price I can tell if what I can pay is in the ball park or not.

third party image

I had this tractor in the Photo Ads a few weeks ago.

It is a '36 F-20 Narrow. Has electric start, belt pulley, pto extension, lights, generator, and road gear in transmission. New tires and tubes front and rear.

I sold it a couple days ago for my asking price of $3,500. I had it on display at the 50 years of Progress show held last weekend just before the Farm Progress show in Henning, Illinois.

The internet (eBay in particular) has been sucessful partially because of the convenience of shopping / buying in the comfort of your home. Where else could you look at a couple hundred old tractors for sale and not spend money on gas?
As far as prices go; in the past few weeks at local farm auctions, I've seen a JD G sell for 4400.00 (a better looking one is offered on this site for 3025.00), and a Allis CA bring 3900.00! When it comes to a "good deal", I think you are more likely to find one here, offered by a serious seller, than spending your weekends driving around looking for one.

I agree. I dont think any one finds a good deal.
I think the good deals find them. You just have to have some cash on hand when it shows.

Yep, any tractor is only worth what any particular buyer is willing to pay for it. And there are many buyers willing to pay a plenty if it's the tractor they want and they have the $$. As a buyer I have done the same, payed too much probably for some tractors, but if it's the tractor I really want and have the $$ at the time I'll buy it. I go home happy, with less $$ in my pocket than I had before, but gained a tractor that I wanted, the seller is happy with more $$ in his pocket, but less one tractor. It's all good. Just have fun & only pay what any tractor is worth to you.

Any price I see on a tractor is a STARTING POINT. No one in their right mind, trying to sell a tractor with an overblown price, expects to sell it for the "listed" price. On the other hand, I've sold a few over the years, for WAY more than they're worth. I see it as a buyers market. If someone has an old junker that they want to get rid of, and I have a pocket full of cash, I HAVE THE UPPER HAND. If they want to sell, they're going to have to move towards me. Then you have the "nuts", that think something is worth more becouse it's theirs. They can keep it. It's the same story with ANYTHING that's for sale. It all depends on how bad they want to sell, and how bad you want to buy. Some people "target" those buyers that "Just can't live without it". There is a "dealer" near me, that prices EVERYTHING 50% to 75% above it's true worth. He doesn't sell anything in a hurry, but for some reason, he finally sells his stuff. There is a buyer out there for anything, at any price.

While I can under stand some one trying to get as much as they can out of a tractor. What I can not see is the prices that some try to charge for scrap iron. You all mention 8N's. I have seen adds say "ran when we parked it 15 years ago". Yet they still want top dollar. I mean it is not like they only built 2000 of these things. Or it is some rare find and I will pay what ever you ask just to have one cause you are the only one with one for sale.
On the other side of the coin I have seen a few (very few though) that do not know what they should charge. CHECK THIS OUT!!!!!
"the.45 per mile delivery charge is per loaded mile. In other words it will cost you .45 mile from me to you. I am not charging a round trip fee if I deliver"
saw this on e-bay at Link

I've bought a couple of tractors from this site. They were close enough that I could go and look at the tractor and get back home in the same day. The asking price was somewhat higher that what I wanted to pay, but when I showed up, "kicked the tires" and established a repore with cash in hand, my offer price didn't look too bad to these sellers. I know when I sell something, I always ask more than what I expect to get. You can always go down, but you can never go up.

If you pay close attention, you will notice that quite a few of the tractors in the photo ads are placed over and over again, which confirms my suspicions that the tractor is way overpriced to begin with.

The problem, I guess if there is a problem, is that people hear that 8N's (or whatever) sold for $3000 in some location. So if you advertise on the internet to 'everywhere' you might as well ask top dollar. No point in trying to sell it for $1500 when somewhere, someone paid $3000 for one.

Can't blame people for trying. :)

An 8n Ford in good condition will bring around $3,000 just about anywhere in the U.S. I have no problem with that, what I did get a real chuckle out of just recently though was a Super M, smoked a little, rear tires were next to smooth, and the paint was faded to the point of being non-existent, was asking $3,500.

8N brings about $1200 around here.

I'd pay $3500 for a Super M tho, long before I'd pay $2000 for an N! Those $3000 N's are terribly overvalued. A Super M can actually do some work.

(And I'm a Ford person on tractors....)

Thats sad but true, however, if I needed work done, I would rather have 5 wornout M's working than 10 cherry 8 N's! I would get more work done. 8N's wont pull the hat off your head.

I had though that was going to change. Its the yuppi market that drags the price so high on the Fords.
I figured they were getting sick of working on old fords so they would pick up some of the high priced Green mini tractors.
The JD dealers are still selling the crap out of thier stuff. So maybe there is just a whole lot more yuppies?
Thats good for me. More Yuppies buying horses. That eat hay :-)

Several things are driving the sales of new John Deere stuff. The biggest reason is the 0% interest rates on some tractors. Another is Good marketing. With a reputation that sells itself,(I am not commenting on their "living up to the reputation")Their products are keeping them in the lead, as far as market share is concerned. All those compact tractors, lawn mowers, gators, and construction equipment they sell, keep the rest of the company (AG EQUIP) solvent. I doubt that they could continue to sell tractors and balers, combines and planters, and the rest of the line, on the limited scale that they sell nowadays, without the infusion of cash that the "consumer products" provide. And as you say, all those "yuppies with horses" fuel the fire that keeps us warm. I sell more used tractors and impliments becouse of all the "week-end farmers". They keep the prices inflated. This puts money in my pocket. When I go to buy something for the farm, it takes money out of the same pocket. I am my own worst enemy! This "hobby/profession" is getting more complicated every day. It takes a creative mind, and some old fashioned hard work to make it. Some things never change.

Yup.
I just happen to be wearing the nice new hat JD sent me after buying one of those nice new L100's
I purchased mine in July. The sales man said that JD planned on maybe selling 90,000 of the L100's
As of July they were upwards of 160,000 of them. Well 160,001 after mine. :-)

I guess it is a matter of opinion and supply and demand in different parts of the country. I have purchased three tractors off this site and traveled 1000 miles one way to pick them up. The price I paid for them, and my trip cost was far cheaper than I could have ever bought one like it for in my area. Plus the trips are a fun little vacation for us to take.
