Hi Y'all, I just bought an 8n.Runs great, until I pushed a stick through the radiator.Thats all fixed.but as I tried to start the tractor to check for leaks, the battery was dead. When I bought the machine. It has a brand new 6 volt battery along with a brand new voltage regulator.I charged the battery back up and now it starts well. Now heres what I found: I removed the cover from the regulator, while the tractor is running,I push the contacts down and it does charge. So this tells me the generator is putting out. But as soon as I let go of the contacts,it stops charging. I tried polarizing the regulator and generator and still nothing. I went through all the wires, getting continuity and they are all hooked up right. The unit had a new wiring harness installed. However the battery was installed with neg. ground. I even tried reversing the battery to pos. ground and still does the same thing. So how do I get the system working and what am I missing here?

Thanx Doug

Doug, You've done a good job of troubleshooting so far. I would take it that you have a wire diagram that you used to verify the hook up as you checked continuity. Did you ensure all of your connection and ground points were clean? If you can start the charge by hand, closing the contacts of the regulator, that pretty much identifies the problem to the regulator. We have a automotive/ag/industrial electrical repair shop that will test and repair genny's, starters, alternators. if you take your voltage regulator in with yiour generator they will test and adjust the regulator as well. Perhaps you have a similar repair service local to you. I've ask at some of the chain automotive stores, unfortunately "old technology " is beyond the scope of their abilities. Have you checked at various engine rpm's ie. at low rpm/idle, mid rpm/900-1100, high 1600+rpm? Did you repolarize the genny after you changed from negative to positive ground? You may want to check your coil polarity to ensure it installed correctly( it will not affect charging but will affect sparkie strength).

Hope I could help some, if you continue to have problems repost on the 9N,2N,8N forum.
